The second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero was one of the most innovative and iconic SUV’s of the 1990’s, and is widely regarded as being one of the best 4×4 off roading SUV’s of all time. We have to give credit where credit is due, the Pajero isn’t fancy, it isn’t pretty (save for the Pajero Evolution) but it is fiercely reliable and gets the job done time and time again. With revolutionary features such as super select 4WD, a transfer case you can engage at close to highway speeds, and a top mount intercooled turbo diesel engine, the Pajero was outfitted with the best technology the 90’s had to offer and has maintained a loyal cult following since then. This particular Pajero, optioned from the factory in 4 door “Exceed” trim, is a 1994 model year example in beautiful, all original condition. What was clearly its previous owner’s pride and joy, this Pajero has racked up a respectable 360k km’s over the years, but even this 223k mile Pajero shows better than some of the lower mileage SUV’s we’ve seen. The exterior is finished in the original white and silver two tone. Save for some typical 28 year old vehicle clear coat fade, the exterior actually shows quite nicely, with no pitting or fading on the chrome accents. OEM Ralliart mudflaps, rain guards, and a front bash bar with dual fog lamps add some OEM plus off road inspired touches to this iconic silhouette while still keeping up with the stock condition of the vehicle. The interior is quite impressive given the age and condition of this SUV. The stock grey cloth upholstery on the factory seats is excellent, with no rips tears or even bolster wear. The dash is free of cracking and sun fading, and even the original leather on the tri spoke steering wheel is smooth and free of damage. All buttons and switches work as expected, down to the digital climate control with ice cold A/C. The moonroof opens and closes smoothly and rear passengers even have the luxury of operating their own climate control for the back half of the vehicle. An OEM altimeter and clinometer is fully functional and affixed atop the center stack and curtains all the way around ensure that this Pajero could be used as a camping vehicle if the next owner desires. Two fold down seats in the rear provide seating for any extra passengers. Overall, this cockpit is a nice place to be. Utilitarian in design, but gets the job done for anyone who travels in it. Pop the hood, turn the key, and the 2.8l 4M40 Turbo Diesel engine fires right up thanks to two fresh batteries. Acceleration is rapid and shifts are smooth through the automatic transmission. As mentioned earlier, the Super Select 4WD system engages without a hitch throughout all drive modes. Mitsubishi definitely has one of the most reliable 4×4 systems and the Pajero is a serious underdog on the trails. With a new set of General grabber tires this bulletproof SUV is turn key and ready to hit the streets, all it needs is a new owner.
