Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X:

The USDM Toyota 4Runner has always had a cult following of off-road enthusiasts and custom modifications to make them stand out as such. In the JDM market- their version of what we know as the 4 runner- the Hilux Surf is not excluded from this following despite being halfway across the world. What made Toyota such a cool car manufacturer was that it knows how to cater to its enthusiasts and creates offerings that touch on some key points that their fans find value in within their respective niches. As we can see now with the TRD 4Runner’s of the modern age, that means cool colors, upgraded shocks and suspension components, and more unique interiors suited to the rugged nature of these vehicles. But as we mentioned- the inspiration for the way these modern 4Runners are built may not be the same if it weren’t for the fans of the platform from the earlier days of its conception. One such example of this inspiration is this 1997 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X that has been fully customized and is full of character. The exterior has been swapped to a fully custom desert Tan paint that looks reminiscent of how the modern TRD 4runner paint options do. Considering it is not factory and has been applied to a vehicle that was intended to be used as a utility vehicle, some minor imperfections can be found such as small scrapes, Knicks, or dings. One such imperfection to note is a very small crack on the left bottom portion of the trunk. Some of the bumpers and trim have been changed to a matted black that pairs very nicely with the tan. The wheels have also been swapped over to some black painted steel 17 inch wheels that are suited up with some suitable Bridgestone Dueller tires. The fitment on these slightly larger wheels looks superb thanks to a decent lift over the stock vehicle height which is accomplished by a set of Rancho RS9000X shocks and lift kit. Underneath shows some signs of the age of this vehicle with some subtle hints of surface rust, but nothing that would be worrying or alarming. Especially with these hilux surf’s we take great care in ensuring that the vehicle is as rust free and problem free as possible when we bring them over from Japan since that is something we know that our enthusiasts are most concerned about, so you can rest assured. The interior of this Surf tells the same ultra custom story and it’s certainly a beauty. Some perfectly form fitting Red faux leather seat covers created a comfortable (and easily cleanable and protected) seating arrangement while also building on the color theme of the vehicle. The inside seems to be a Creme and Red theme, with some of the dash panels being swapped for some custom Light creme colored ones instead of the original gray. Red floor mats come with this one as well completing the package of a unified theme and they look great! A wood grain 3 spoke steering wheel is a modification that also helps tie together the whole look of this Off-Road warrior. The Head unit has also been swapped out for a very nice Pioneer Carrozzeria touchscreen unit over the factory radio. This one also has a Kenwood Dash cam equipped showing just how much the previous owner cared about this vehicle. On to the powertrain of this thing, it comes equipped with the popular 3RZ-FE 2.7L Gas engine paired to an automatic transmission. It goes without saying that this is also equipped with 4WD and ready to tackle the trails or the elements! No modifications to the powertrain of the vehicle have been made as far as engine mods, however you may not the engine bay has been resprayed to a red which matches the interior. This whole vehicle has a 287,227 verified kilometers and for a 26 year old vehicle and Toyota’s legendary reliability and build quality (especially in the 90’s) this one has got plenty of life left to give!
