Vehicle History
Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon:
The Mitsubishi Delica Star Wagon is, in essence, the epitome of a cult classic vehicle. A quirky, bulletproof adventure van, the Delica was originally never offered for sale to the US market, but in the mid 2010’s when the ever popular “L300” variant became legal to import stateside via the 25 year rule, Delicas took American shores by storm. The perfect vehicle for overlanders, off road enthusiasts and adventurous hobbyists alike, the Delica, short for “Delivery Car” could accomplish any task it was set out to do, thanks to features such as selectable 4×4, a solid rear axle, and enough room to fit 8 passengers with room to spare. Powered by a stout 2.5l turbo diesel engine, the Delica really does it all, and this particular 1997 model, offered in Star Wagon “Active World” trim happens to feature the highly desirable 5 speed manual gearbox. The Active World trim was marketed as a cold-weather ready package and included useful goodies such as a rear LSD, high amperage alternator, larger battery, and a more insulated roof to help regulate cabin temperatures. For those looking to use this Delica as an overlanding vehicle, the interior amenities and overall room in the cabin is certainly impressive. One look at the exterior and you instantly know what this van is about, the outside is finished in the original two-tone silver and dark blue pearl paint scheme. Original “active world” stickers adorn the exterior and make this van a real head turner. OEM front, side, and rear bars are finished in chrome and are a perfect, functional complement to the rest of the vehicle. Original alloy wheels are wrapped in good condition snow tires and are ready to tackle even the harshest of climates. The odometer reads about 149,830 km. Translating to roughly 93k original miles this Delica has a ton of life left. The interior is in good condition, save for some typical age-related wear. The OEM patterned cloth seats have remained in excellent shape in all three rows, and the rest of the interior upholstery and dash materials follow suit, save for some light bubbling on top of the dash. Other known defects in the interior include wear marks on the manual shift knob, parking brake handle, interior grab handles, and light damage to the OEM all weather floor mats. All interior accessories are fully functional and in good shape, down to the climate control with working A/C, and OEM temp gauge, altimeter and clinometer. By far the coolest feature in the interior is the convertible middle row seat, where passengers can choose between facing the front or rear of the vehicle. Great for family road trips! Rear passengers also have separate access to their own climate control features, which fire up and work without a hitch. For travel enthusiasts, Mitsubishi was kind enough to offer curtains as standard equipment, making the Delica a great place to sleep on the road. Flick a latch under the passenger seat and you’ll reveal the turbo diesel powerplant, positioned snugly under the floorboards. The engine fires right up and idles smoothly. Driving this Delica is certainly an experience in itself. Shifts are smooth and direct through the 5-speed manual gearbox, with no grinds or pop outs at all. The 4WD selector works as expected in all drive modes, and a rear LSD helps put the power down on or off the road. While it’s not the fastest thing in the world, the Delica is comfortable on most roads and is definitely a fun driving experience. If you’re looking for a go anywhere, do anything vehicle with a bit of classic JDM flair, the Mitsubishi Delica L300 is a truly delicious option.
