Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear:

The Mitsubishi Delica Space Gear was originally never offered for sale to the US market, but in the mid 2010’s when the ever popular “L300” variant became legal to import stateside via the 25-year rule, Delicas took American shores by storm. In 1994, the Delica underwent a major overhaul as Mitsubishi rolled out the fourth generation “L400” variant. Marketed to the Japanese as the Delica “Space Gear” the L400 did away with the boxy bodywork of previous generations in favor of bubbly, rounded edges throughout the chassis. Both body styles remained in production throughout the 90’s, and Japanese buyers still had the ability to purchase the previous generation if they preferred the engine down low and the fog lights up high. Powered by Mitsubishi’s 4M40 turbo diesel engine, this 1996 Delica, offered in Space Gear “Chamonix” trim is a perfect choice for overlanders and road trippers alike! The Chamonix trim was marketed as a cold-weather ready package and included useful goodies such as a rear LSD, high amperage alternator, larger battery, and a more insulated roof to help regulate cabin temperatures. For those looking to use this Delica as an overlanding vehicle, the interior amenities and overall room in the cabin is certainly impressive. The previous owner removed the 3rd row seat making this an ideal choice for those living life on the road (see: touring bands) One look at the exterior and you instantly know what this van is about, the outside is finished in a two-tone silver and dark blue pearl paint scheme. The hood and roof have been repainted to combat clear coat fade but there is no collision record on the vehicle. Original “Chamonix” stickers adorn the exterior and make this van a real head turner. The front fascia is accentuated by an OEM chrome bull bar with yellow Chamonix branded fog lights. The exterior has some light dents and scuffs, typical for a 26 year old vehicle but overall this van has held up quite well cosmetically. The rear half of the vehicle has been one way mirror tinted so those looking to sleep in the back can have some privacy. Original alloy wheels are wrapped in good condition all season tires and are ready to hit the road. The odometer reads about 268,947 km. Translating to roughly 167k original miles this Delica has certainly seen its share of road trips while remaining in great condition. Interior is in good condition, save for some typical age-related wear. The front seats have been swapped from another Delica and thus do not wear the original patterned blue upholstery seen on the middle row and carpeting. Despite the differences, the front seats are free of any rips, tears, or major wear and get the job done. The rest of the interior trim is in good shape, even the dash which is completely free of cracks or sun damage. The middle row features an additional fold out 3rd seat. Other known defects in the interior include wear marks on the steering wheel, automatic shift lever, parking brake handle, and a missing finish panel below the radio. All interior accessories are fully functional and in good shape, down to the climate control with working A/C, and OEM temp gauge, altimeter, and clinometer. Rear passengers also have separate access to their own climate control features, which fire up and work without a hitch. Pop the hood and the turbo diesel powerplant shines in all its glory. The engine fires right up and idles smoothly. Driving this Delica is certainly an experience in itself. Shifts are smooth and direct through the 3 speed automatic gearbox. Mitsubishi’s Super Select 4WD allows you to shift between drive modes at highway speeds and a rear LSD helps put the power down on or off the road. While it’s not the fastest thing in the world, the Delica is comfortable on most roads and is definitely a fun driving experience. If you’re looking for a go anywhere, do anything vehicle with a bit of classic JDM flair, this Delica is right on the cha-money.
