Mazda’s 3rd generation RX7 is an iconic, two seat sport coupe that is the epitome of a JDM “Halo Car”. With timeless, yet futuristic styling, nimble handling, and an oddball twin turbo Wankel rotary engine that could rev to the moon, the RX7 has built a cultlike following across the globe and solidified its title as the most iconic Mazda of all time. With Japanese model production lasting almost 10 years, there is still a healthy number of examples to be found on the secondhand market. However, like any enthusiast car, most examples for sale, both in the United States and Japan have been well loved and heavily modified by previous owners. This first-year Japanese market “Efini” RX7 is not one of those cars. Covering only 57,223 km’s since new (35,000 original miles!) this “FD3S” RX7 is an absolute peach sure to achieve collector status in no time. The exterior of the FD RX7 is simply timeless, with its futuristic curvy body lines turning heads even decades after its introduction. Resprayed in Mazda’s iconic Chaste White, this RX7 is a sight to behold, with the only exterior modification being an incredibly rare Knightsports rear wing, and OEM fog lights affixed to the front bumper. The stock 5 spoke alloys have been replaced with a fitting set of 17” AVS Model 5 alloys, a period correct look for this iconic chassis. The interior is as clean as you’d expect a 35,000 mile car to be. The OEM suede seats are free of any rips, tears, or stains, the dash plastic is in superb condition, all buttons and switches function accordingly, and the JDM optional rear seats are intact and in clean condition as well. The OEM leather wrapped steering wheel shows little to no signs of use and feels great in your hands as you pilot this rotary rocket down the road. The only modification to the interior is a Blitz mechanical boost gauge, a necessary tool for monitoring the performance of the stock twin turbochargers. Turn the key, pop the hood, and the 13B-REW rotary engine whirrs to life without a hitch. Mechanically, this engine is almost stock, a refreshing change from the more modified examples usually imported into the US. The only modification to the engine is a set of twin intakes. The engine runs and accelerates smoothly without skipping a beat. An aftermarket JASMA-spec muffler was installed and produces a modest hum under acceleration without being too overbearing. Driving an FD is loads of fun, and this example is no exception. The 13B engine is incredibly rev-happy and shifts through the 5-speed manual transmission are smooth and direct. This RX7 has no issues putting the power down to the rear wheels, and the stock suspension does surprisingly well at keeping this FD pinned and planted in the corners.
