It’s no secret that Honda was at the top of their game during the 1990’s. Sportier models, such as the Civic Si and Integra were economical yet exciting, and the CR-V and Odyssey were utilitarian options that were built to do it all, and do it reliably. While every model seemed to have its own role in Honda’s lineup, there was one car that never seemed to fit in. The Del Sol. It was a convertible, but not a grand, luxurious one. It was a compact car, but not a practical hatchback. It was, however, loved by many, and has amassed a sizable cult following decades later. This particular Del Sol is a Japanese Market example and comes equipped in SiR trim, which includes many features not offered in the US domestic market. The most noticeable, perhaps, is the power retractable hardtop, more affectionately known as the “Transtop”. With the flick of a few switches, the hardtop removes itself, and stores itself in the trunk of the vehicle. For a car from the early 90’s, that’s pretty impressive. Other JDM exclusive options include a different front end, and the punchy B16A engine, the same one found in the Civic SiR. Cosmetically, the previous owner of this Del Sol made sure it stood out from others on Japanese shores. The body was resprayed in Honda’s OEM Championship White color, the same white used on the legendary Civic and Integra Type R vehicles. The OEM front bumper was replaced with a top of the line Mugen example, and a Type R style rear wing was added as a tasteful addition to the otherwise bland rear end. A set of 17” OZ Ultraleggera wheels round off the tastefully done exterior. It’s clear the previous owner had a vision for this car, and if we didn’t know any better we’d think this was a true Type R vehicle, although the Del Sol was never offered in this trim. The interior is just as clean and impressive as the exterior. The flimsy stock bucket seats were replaced with a set of DC5 Recaro Integra Type R seats. The fabric is in great condition, with minimal bolster wear and no rips or tears. The steering wheel has been replaced with one out of an Integra Type R, and the shift knob is genuine Type R as well. The Air Conditioning is functional and blows cold. The gauge cluster displays just 106k original km’s, which translates to just 66,000 miles! Mechanically, this del sol is in excellent condition. The original B16A engine has remained in its stock form and revs happily to redline. Shifts are smooth through the FWD 5 Speed manual gearbox. The only modification to the engine is a conservative aftermarket exhaust, which delivers a tone that is not harsh or raspy like most modified Honda’s. If you’re a Honda enthusiast looking for a unique addition to your collection, this Del Sol is a well done example that’s fun to drive and even better to look at!
