Out of all the iconic classic sports cars that are eligible to import from Japan, 3 “halo cars” will always have a spot in every JDM enthusiast’s dream garage. Nissan’s fierce “Godzilla” GTR, Toyota’s iconic 4th generation Supra, and Mazda’s futuristic and quirky FD RX-7. Out of these three options, the RX-7 seems to be the only one that hasn’t reached die hard collector status price, which is great news for American enthusiasts looking to own a true driver’s car from overseas. It’s a car that enthusiasts just can’t get enough of, and now that Japanese Spec examples are legal to import into the USA, the market is able to be consistently supplied with tasteful, low mileage examples, such as this 1993 Montego Blue beauty offered here at J- Spec Auto. This particular “Efini” FD3S RX7, optioned from the factory in Type R2 trim is astoundingly clean and looks to have been gently used and preserved well by the previous owner. The exterior is finished in a coat of Mazda’s beautiful Montego Blue (M8). The paint is in fantastic shape with no flaws, and perfectly accentuates the FD RX7’s timeless body lines. The vehicle received a professional respray in the USA and was detailed afterwards to comply to our rigorous vehicle restoration standards. The exterior has remained mostly stock with the only modifications being a pair of aftermarket side skirts and period correct set of Yokohama AVS VS5 split 5 spoke wheels. The rest of the body is clean, original, and rust free. The inside is in equally as clean condition and stands as a testament to the simplistic elegance of early 90’s sports car interiors. The factory black cloth seats are in immaculate condition, with no rips, tears, or burns on the fabric. All other materials in the interior are in great shape and all buttons and switches on the dash function as expected. The factory steering wheel was replaced with a stylish Personal wheel, a perfect complement to the interior. Unlike most Efini RX7’s, this model was not equipped with the factory rear seats, instead two storage bins are located in the interior, much like on the USDM models. The interior is free of any aftermarket modification, save for a Blitz boost gauge and Greddy Turbo Timer. Purists will be please to notice the factory spare and tool kits intact. The pictures on this one really speak for themselves, this car is gorgeous. The original gauge cluster was replaced, making the previously recorded 91k kilometres unverified. Turn the key and the 13B twin turbo engine fires right up and happily purrs at idle. Air induction modifications, such as HKS intercooler piping and an ARC airbox help the twin turbos spool nicely and the engine has no issues at all reaching its screaming 8,000 RPM redline. An aftermarket exhaust emits a nice whirr without being incredibly overbearing. Other than that, the engine is free of any serious aftermarket modification that may hamper reliability in the future. Cusco coilovers keep this FD3S dialed in the corners and a brand new set of tires ensure that this RX7 will grip the road no matter what weather conditions are thrown its way.
