Honda’s fourth generation prelude marked the beginning of a new era of design for Honda automobiles in Japan. Gone were the boxy design trends and flip up headlights. The 4th gen prelude featured smooth, flowing body lines, one-piece headlights, and a futuristic interior, with a sweeping digital dash and driver-oriented cockpit. Changes were also made in the drivetrain department as well, where Honda engineers reworked the already revolutionary 4-wheel steering system and gave the platform a modest horsepower bump. The top trim “SiR-VTEC” model was the first to feature Honda’s powerful H22A engine, a torquey 197 horsepower 2.2 inline 4 with Honda’s legendary variable valve timing added. The SiR was only offered in Japan, with the North American market not seeing the engine until much later. This particular 1994 model year “BB4” Prelude SiR does not feature the aforementioned 4-wheel steering system, which is ok by us as that means less components are likely to fail. It does, however, come equipped with everything else that makes the JDM Prelude an absolute thrill to drive on the road. The exterior is in fantastic condition given the age of the car. Given a stellar “Grade 4” rating at auction, it’s clear to see why. All original paint, no dents or dings, and clearcoat that’s surprisingly clear for being 26 years old. The only modification to the exterior is a set of 17” AVS Model 6 wheels, a fitting replacement over the dated stock alloys. Swing open the prominent coupe doors and you’ll notice the interior is in equally as clean condition. The stock upholstery is free of any rips, tears or serious bolster wear on the seats. Dash plastics are in impressive shape as well, and it’s even more impressive that the whole digital dash, down to the automatic climate control is still fully functional and intact. The interior on the 4th generation prelude is futuristic yet retro, and it is one of the many things that makes this Honda so special. The OEM wheel has been replaced with a 3 spoke unit from an Integra type R. This is a fitting upgrade and makes for a nice OEM plus feel in the cockpit. The digital odometer reads just 116,120 verified km’s. Equating to just 72,153 miles, there’s no surprise as to why everything is so minty fresh inside this lude. The rest of the interior is completely stock, save for an aftermarket Gathers headunit, preloaded with plenty of Japanese tunes to rock out to as you tear up stateside streets. Turn the key and the H22A VTEC engine happily springs to life. Acceleration is smooth and satisfying throughout the powerband, VTEC engages as expected and the engine pulls effortlessly to redline. Shifts through the 5 speed manual transmission are smooth and direct, with no grinds, pop outs, or other mechanical hiccups. Mechanically, the engine is completely stock, with no modifications made to any factory equipment, not even the original intake nor exhaust was replaced. The only modification present in the engine bay is an upgraded PIAA HID headlight kit, a much needed upgrade over the underperforming OEM halogens. All in all, you’d be hard pressed to find a better stock condition 4th gen Prelude. Honda prices are on the rise in Japan, so scoop this cherry example before all the good ones are gone!
