The FD3S Efini (Mazda) RX7 can be best described with one word, timeless. Throughout the years, Mazda’s 3rd generation wankel powered warrior has never gone out of style. Its smooth, futuristic body lines have graced many a bedroom wall poster, and their popularity in the tuning scene has made the FD a fan favorite at shows or on the racetrack. It’s a car that enthusiasts just can’t get enough of, and now that Japanese Spec examples are legal to import into the USA, the market is able to be consistently supplied with tasteful, low mileage examples, such as this 1992 model year beauty offered here at J- Spec Auto. With only 85,058 verified km’s (52,853 miles!) on the clock, this FD RX7, optioned in Type R trim has plenty of life left, and is equipped with a fair amount of quality modifications to further enhance the driving experience of this iconic 90’s sport coupe. The exterior of this FD3S is finished in a nice coat of Mazda’s Brilliant Black (PZ). While some evidence of prior paintwork is present on the body, there is no collision record on the vehicle and all panels match up extremely well. The front fascia has been enhanced, thanks to a pair of OEM fog lights and pop ups have been successfully blocked thanks to a set of aftermarket “sleek” headlights. The OEM Type R side skirts and rear mud guards accentuate the FD’s already smooth body lines, and an aftermarket C West carbon wing adds an aggressive touch to the rear end. Rounding off the exterior mods is a set of 17×9 Enkei RPF1 wheels in a silver finish that perfectly complements the sleek black paintwork. Swing open the stout coupe doors and the clean, driver oriented cockpit welcomes you in. The driver’s seat has been replaced with a red Bride Zeta bucket, which holds you in quite well and is a period correct addition to such a classic interior. The upholstery on the rest of the interior remains in good shape, save for some light cracking and tears on the leather on the JDM exclusive rear seats. Although this FD is nearing 30 years of service, the interior has been kept exceptionally well. The main interior finish panel is in good shape and all buttons, switches, and controls are fully functional. Modifications to the interior are subtle, with the only major changes being a Pivot turbo timer and Tomei mechanical boost gauge affixed atop the steering column. The three spoke OEM steering wheel is in fantastic shape and feels great as you pilot this rotary rocket down the road. The OEM instrument cluster is fully intact and all gauges work without a hitch! Pop the hood, and the infamous 13B Twin Turbo rotary engine sits front and center. This oddball motor fires right up and revs smoothly throughout the powerband up to a screaming 8,000 RPM’s. The engine has been kept mostly stock, with the exception of an upgraded Trust intake system and modest aftermarket catback exhaust. Shifts through the 5 speed manual transmission are smooth and direct, and the car is quite a treat to drive throughout the corners, thanks to its low curb weight and center of gravity. Don’t let its appearance fool you, this FD is quite tame, easy to drive and extremely rewarding if the powerband is used to its full potential.
