In Japan, Subaru paired it with the EJ208 twin-turbo engine in the Legacy B4 and GT-B, which were factory-rated at 280 PS, the Japanese maximum at the time, as Wikipedia’s third-generation Legacy history explains. As a result, it’s a popular swap for WRX, Forester XT and Legacy owners who want a stout 5-speed. In addition, this package includes the matching 4.11 R160 rear differential and all four axles.

Why the Included Axles Matter

This transmission uses female-type front axle outputs, while many U.S. Subaru 5-speeds use male-type axles. In other words, your original front axles may not fit. Fortunately, the matching front axles come in the package, so you can install the transmission without hunting for the right axles.

Why You Must Install the Included Rear Diff

On an all-wheel-drive Subaru, the front and rear final drive ratios must match. Otherwise, the center differential works constantly and wears out fast. Because this transmission uses 4.11 gearing, install the included 4.11 rear diff. For example, a stock 2002–2005 WRX uses 3.90 and a 2004–2005 Forester XT uses 4.444, so neither original rear diff will match.

How the 4.11 Gearing Changes Your Car

Your car will feel different depending on its original ratio. In a WRX with stock 3.90 gearing, 4.11 accelerates a little harder. By contrast, a Forester XT with stock 4.444 gearing will feel slightly taller and cruise at lower highway RPM. Either way, your speedometer may read slightly off, so ask your installer whether a correction is needed.

How to Install This Legacy Twin Turbo Transmission

1. First, confirm your clutch, fork and release bearing are pull type.
2. Next, install the transmission with a fresh clutch if yours is worn.
3. Then, install the included female-type front axles.
4. After that, replace your rear differential with the included 4.11 R160 diff, and install the rear axles.
5. Finally, fill the transmission and rear diff with fresh gear oil before driving.
