This JDM Forester XT 5-speed transmission package is a complete drivetrain replacement for the 2004–2005 Subaru Forester XT. Along with the TY755VW5AA transmission, you get the matching R160 rear differential and all four axles. Better yet, the 4.444 final drive matches the stock ratio Subaru used in the U.S. Forester XT 5-speed, so it drops right in. The second-generation Forester used Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive, which is why matching front and rear ratios matters.

Why the Matching Rear Diff Matters

On an all-wheel-drive Subaru, the front and rear final drive ratios must match. Otherwise, the center differential works constantly and wears out fast. Since the stock 2004–2005 Forester XT 5-speed already uses 4.444, the ratio stays the same. Even so, the included rear diff gives you a fresh, matched unit. On the other hand, a 2002–2005 WRX uses 3.90 gearing, so WRX owners must install the included 4.444 rear diff.

Upgrading a WRX to 4.444 Gearing

In a 2002–2005 WRX, the 4.444 final drive makes the car accelerate harder in every gear. However, the engine runs at higher RPM on the highway. Also, your speedometer may read high, so ask your installer whether a correction is needed.

How to Install This Forester XT 5-Speed Transmission

1. First, confirm your clutch, fork and release bearing are pull type.
2. Next, install the transmission with a fresh clutch if yours is worn.
3. Then, install the included 4.444 R160 rear diff, which is required for WRX swaps.
4. After that, install the four included axles.
5. Finally, fill the transmission and rear diff with fresh gear oil before driving.
