JDM Toyota 2AZ-FE 2.4L Replacement Engine
If your Camry, RAV4 or Scion 2.4L burns oil, knocks or has failed, this JDM Toyota 2AZ-FE gives you an affordable way back on the road. Toyota used the 2AZ-FE in many of its most popular models, so parts and know-how are easy to find. Moreover, Japan’s strict inspection rules push owners to retire cars early. As a result, JDM engines often have far fewer miles than U.S. engines of the same age. In this case, the engine shows about 60,000 miles and comes with a 90-day warranty.
2AZ-FE at a Glance
First, the basics: the 2AZ-FE displaces 2,362 cc with an 88.5 mm bore and a 96 mm stroke. It also uses an aluminum block, a DOHC 16-valve head, VVT-i, and a timing chain. In U.S. form, it makes roughly 157–158 hp and about 161–162 lb-ft of torque. This particular engine, serial 2AZ B276654, tested at [210 / 210 / 210 / 210] PSI. In addition, you can watch its compression test in the video on this page.
Vehicle Compatibility
This 2AZ-FE long block replaces the 2.4L engine in the following U.S. models:
- 2002–2009 Toyota Camry 2.4L
- 2002–2008 Toyota Camry Solara 2.4L
- 2004–2008 Toyota RAV4 2.4L
- 2001–2007 Toyota Highlander 2.4L
- 2009–2010 Toyota Corolla XRS and 2009–2013 Toyota Matrix 2.4L
- 2005–2010 Scion tC
- 2008–2015 Scion xB
However, external parts vary from model to model. For that reason, send us your VIN, and we’ll confirm the fit before you order.
Installation Checklist
Because this is a long-block replacement, your installer moves several parts from your original engine. For a smooth install, follow these steps:
- First, transfer your timing chain cover. The engine mount bracket attaches there, and its mounting points differ between models.
- Next, move the intake manifold, throttle body, fuel rail and injectors.
- Then, swap over the exhaust manifold and catalytic converter.
- After that, transfer all sensors, the coil packs and the engine wiring harness.
- Also, move the alternator, A/C compressor, power steering pump and brackets.
- Meanwhile, compare the oil pan and engine mounts, and use your originals if they differ.
- Finally, keep your original ECU, since it matches your car’s emissions system.
In addition, use the correct accessory belt. For 2002–2006 models, use belt 7PK1940. For 2007 and newer models, use belt 7PK1955 instead.
Most importantly, keep your original engine until the job is complete. That way, your installer can compare parts side by side.
Know the 2AZ-FE’s Weak Spots
To be clear, no engine is perfect, and the 2AZ-FE has two well-known issues. First, some 2006-and-later U.S. engines burned excess oil, and Toyota ran an oil consumption program for affected cars. Second, the head bolt threads in the aluminum block can wear, which can lead to a head gasket leak. Toyota addressed this in TSB SB-0015-11. Therefore, ask your installer about preventive head bolt thread inserts while the engine sits on the stand. Also, check the oil level often during the first few months.
What’s Included

Before You Install
The 2AZ-FE uses a timing chain, so it doesn’t need a belt service. Even so, replace the water pump, thermostat, spark plugs and accessory belt while you have easy access. At the same time, replace the valve cover gasket and front crank seal. Then, add fresh oil, a new filter and Toyota-approved coolant.
Before the first start, prime the oil system. Next, fill and fully bleed the cooling system. During the first heat cycles, watch oil pressure, coolant temperature and leaks. Finally, scan for trouble codes and clear any codes from the installation.

Is a JDM 2AZ-FE different from a U.S. 2AZ-FE?
