This Toyota 2GR-FE engine has no oil cooler, which makes it a direct long-block replacement for most Camry, Avalon, ES350, and non-tow Venza, Sienna, and RAV4 V6 models. Toyota used the 3.5L 2GR-FE across many of its best-selling cars, as Wikipedia’s Toyota GR engine overview shows. As a result, this one engine can bring a wide range of vehicles back to life. 2GR-FE at a Glance

First, the basics: the 2GR-FE is a 3.5L aluminum DOHC V6 with dual VVT-i and a maintenance-free timing chain. In U.S. vehicles, it makes roughly 266–272 hp and about 245–248 lb-ft of torque, depending on the model. This engine, serial 2GR 0857659, shows about 60,000 miles. Finally, it comes with a 90-day warranty.

Which Vehicles Take a 2GR-FE Engine With No Oil Cooler?

These models normally came without an oil cooler, so this engine is a direct long-block swap:

• 2007–2017 Toyota Camry V6
• 2005–2018 Toyota Avalon
• 2007–2018 Lexus ES350
• 2006–2012 Toyota RAV4 V6 (non-tow)
• 2009–2015 Toyota Venza V6 (non-tow)

Installing This 2GR-FE Engine in a Vehicle With an Oil Cooler

Every 2008–2016 Highlander came with an engine oil cooler, and many Sienna, Venza and RAV4 models with the tow package did too. Fortunately, you can still use this engine in those vehicles. To do so, transfer your original upper oil pan, oil cooler, water neck and thermostat bypass pipe onto this engine. Likewise, Lexus models such as the RX350 and ES350 use an oil level sensor in the upper pan, so move that pan over as well. In short, keep your original engine until the swap is complete.

Installation Tips

1. First, transfer your intake manifold, sensors and wiring harness from the original engine.
2. Next, move over the alternator, A/C compressor and accessory brackets as needed.
3. Then, inspect the VVT-i oil line. Early 2GR-FE engines used a rubber line that can burst, so replace it with the later all-metal line.
4. After that, replace the water pump, thermostat, spark plugs and accessory belt while you have easy access.
5. Finally, prime the oil system, bleed the cooling system and scan for trouble codes after the first start.

Will this 2GR-FE engine with no oil cooler fit my 2010 Camry?

Yes. The Camry V6 came without an oil cooler, so this engine replaces it as a long block.

Can I use this 2GR-FE engine in a Highlander?

Yes, but you’ll need to transfer your Highlander’s upper oil pan, oil cooler, water neck and bypass pipe, because every Highlander 2GR-FE came with a cooler.

Does it matter whether my engine had an oil cooler?

Only for installation. Internally, the engines are essentially the same, so you simply move your cooler parts over if your vehicle had them.

Does the 2GR-FE have a timing belt or chain?

It uses a timing chain. Therefore, you don’t need a timing belt service before installation.

Will it fit an AWD vehicle?

Generally, yes. The long block is the same, but compare your oil pan and mounts with the original before installation.
