JDM EJ205 Replacement Engine for the 2006–2014 Subaru WRX

Did the EJ255 in your 2006–2014 WRX fail? First, know that you have a cheaper option than a used USDM 2.5L. This JDM Subaru EJ205 2.0L turbo engine with single AVCS costs less and usually has fewer miles. In addition, it shares the same EJ boxer layout, so it fits the same engine bay. However, it works as a long-block swap, so your installer moves your WRX’s original parts onto it and then tunes the ECU.

Why WRX Owners Choose a JDM EJ205

Above all, the price makes sense. A JDM EJ205 usually costs far less than a rebuilt or low-mileage EJ255. Also, Japan’s strict vehicle inspection rules push owners to retire cars early, so these engines often have low mileage. Furthermore, the EJ205 and EJ255 use the same mounts and bellhousing pattern, which keeps the swap straightforward.

However, you should know the trade-off. Because you go from 2.5L to 2.0L, the car makes less torque at low RPM. Still, a proper tune restores smooth drivability, and the EJ205 pulls well once boost builds.

EJ255 to EJ205 Swap Checklist

Since this is a long-block swap, your installer moves several parts from the EJ255 to the EJ205. For best results, follow these steps in order:

1. First, transfer the intake manifold together with the engine harness.
2. Next, move the turbo, up-pipe, and the turbo oil and coolant lines.
3. Then, swap over the exhaust headers.
4. After that, transfer the oil pan, pickup tube, windage tray and dipstick.
5. Also, move the coolant crossover and PCV manifolds.
6. In addition, transfer the AVCS solenoids and every sensor.
7. Meanwhile, compare the intake cam position sensors and reluctors. If they differ, use the EJ255 parts or match them before startup.
8. Likewise, install JDM AVCS-specific valve cover gaskets, because this engine uses a unique JDM gasket.
9. On the other hand, the motor mounts and flexplate can stay on the JDM engine.
10. Finally, keep your USDM ECU and have a tuner calibrate it for the 2.0L engine.

Most importantly, keep your original EJ255 until the swap is complete. That way, your installer can compare parts side by side.

Before You Install

The EJ205 uses a timing belt. Therefore, replace the timing belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump while the engine sits outside the car. At the same time, replace the cam and crank seals, rear main seal, valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. Also, add fresh oil and a new filter, and check the AVCS oil-control solenoid screens.
