Description

JDM 2002-2005 WRX Transmission with 4.44 LSD Rear Diff and Axles

This JDM 2002-2005 WRX transmission package gives your Impreza WRX a matched 5-speed drivetrain in one purchase. Along with the TY754VB5AA transmission, you get the matching 4.444 R160 limited-slip rear differential and all four axles. In addition, the shorter 4.444 final drive makes the car pull noticeably harder than the stock 3.90 gearing. Better yet, the limited-slip rear diff puts power down better than the stock open diff. The second-generation Impreza WRX used Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel drive, so front and rear ratios must match.

What’s Included in This 2002-2005 WRX Transmission Package

  • TY754VB5AA 5-speed manual transmission (pull-type clutch), serial 885316
  • Matching R160 limited-slip rear differential, 4.444 ratio
  • All four axles

We include only the parts listed above or shown in the photos. So, if you need a specific part, call us before you order.

Why the Limited-Slip Rear Diff Is an Upgrade

The U.S. 2002–2005 WRX came with an open rear differential, which sends power to the wheel with the least grip. By contrast, a limited-slip diff shares power between both rear wheels. As a result, the car pulls harder out of corners and handles slippery roads with more control. In short, you get better gearing and better traction in one package.

Axle Condition: CV Boots May Need Replacing

We want you to know exactly what you’re buying. The four axles come with the package, but some CV boots show age and may need replacing before or during installation. Fortunately, CV boot kits are inexpensive, and you’ll already have the axles out during the swap. Also, the photos show the current boot condition, so look them over closely. If you’d like, our shop can replace the boots when we install the package.

Why You Must Install the Included Rear Diff

On an all-wheel-drive Subaru, the front and rear final drive ratios must match. Otherwise, the center differential works constantly and wears out fast. Because a stock 2002–2005 WRX uses 3.90 gearing and this transmission uses 4.444, install the included 4.444 rear diff. In other words, don’t reuse your original 3.90 rear differential.

What the 4.444 Final Drive Does

Compared with the stock 3.90 ratio, the 4.444 final drive multiplies torque at the wheels. Therefore, the car accelerates harder in every gear. On the other hand, the engine runs at higher RPM on the highway. Also, your speedometer may read high, so ask your installer whether a correction is needed.

2002-2005 WRX Transmission Fitment

  • 2002–2005 Subaru Impreza WRX sedan and wagon with a 5-speed manual

This transmission uses a pull-type clutch, so match your clutch, fork and release bearing to it. For that reason, send us your VIN, and we’ll confirm the fit before you order.

How to Install This 2002-2005 WRX Transmission

  1. First, confirm your clutch, fork and release bearing are pull type.
  2. Next, install the transmission with a fresh clutch if yours is worn.
  3. Then, replace your rear differential with the included 4.444 R160 LSD.
  4. After that, inspect the CV boots and replace any torn or cracked ones before installing the axles.
  5. Finally, fill the transmission and rear diff with fresh gear oil before driving.

2002-2005 WRX Transmission FAQ

Will this transmission fit my 2004 WRX?

Yes. It fits the 2002–2005 WRX with a 5-speed manual, as long as you also install the included rear diff.

Is the rear differential a limited-slip?

Yes. It’s an R160 limited-slip differential with a 4.444 ratio, matched to the transmission.

Can I keep my stock rear differential?

No. Your stock rear diff is 3.90, while this transmission is 4.444. Since the ratios must match, install the included 4.444 LSD.

What condition are the axles in?

The axles are included, but some CV boots may need replacing. Check the photos, and plan to replace any torn boots during installation.

Is this a push-type or pull-type transmission?

It’s pull type. Therefore, use a pull-type clutch, fork and release bearing.

Can J-Spec Auto install this for me?

Yes. We offer professional installation at our Henrico, VA shop near Richmond, and we can replace the CV boots at the same time. Call 866-683-3747 or schedule an appointment for a quote.
