Mazda’s 3rd generation RX7 is an iconic, two seat sport coupe that is the epitome of a JDM “Halo Car”. With timeless, yet futuristic styling, nimble handling, and an oddball rotary engine that could rev to the moon, the RX7 has built a cultlike following across the globe and solidified it’s title as the most iconic Mazda of all time. With Japanese model production lasting almost 10 years, there is still a healthy amount of examples to be found on the secondhand market. However, like any enthusiast car, most examples for sale have been well loved and heavily modified by previous owners. This particular 1995 “Efini” RX7 is not one of those cars. Optioned in lightweight “Bathurst” trim, this RX7 has accumulated just 67,527 original kilometres (41,959 miles!) over the years and has remained almost bone stock. This is a true collector’s FD and by far the nicest example we have ever seen at our US facility. The exterior is finished in a well preserved coat of Mazda’s Brilliant Black. An appropriate name, as the car truly looks brilliant after receiving a protective paint correction in house. Our history report on the vehicle shows paint work performed on the front end of the vehicle, nothing out of the ordinary for a 25 year old vehicle. The only modification to the exterior is an OEM MazdaSpeed wing, a perfect compliment to the smooth, flowing body lines and an excellent replacement for the lackluster factory unit. The OEM 5 spoke wheels have held up extremely well over the years and are wrapped in a great set of aggressive Yokohama S Drive rubber. The interior is as impressively clean as the exterior. The factory cloth upholstery is in good condition, with no rips, tears, or burns. The dash is free of cracking or other damage, and all interior switches and buttons work as expected. The factory steering wheel has been replaced with a MOMO race model, which compliments the look of the driver oriented cockpit quite well. The previous owner has added an aftermarket Blitz tachometer, which serves as a replacement for the defective OEM unit. The rest of the gauges work as expected. The dinosaur of a factory head unit has been replaced with a Carrozzeria single din, paired to a Strada navigation system. While the navigation is loaded up with exclusively Japanese maps, it does make a great conversation piece and is a fitting addition to a JDM automobile. Turn the key and the 1.3l Wankel Rotary fires right up. Enthusiasts will be pleased to know that the engine is in original, bone-stock shape. A MazdaSpeed Axleback exhaust was added to slightly accentuate the lovely hum of the 13B engine, but that remains the only “performance” mod done to this vehicle. The engine runs superb, reaching it’s 8,000 RPM redline quickly, thanks to the stout sequential twin turbo setup. Paired to a smooth shifting 5 speed manual, this FD is a treat to drive, and zips along twisty backroads with ease.
