5MT vs 6MT: Why Subaru Owners Upgrade

Subaru 5-speeds are known to struggle behind modified turbo engines, especially with sticky tires and hard launches. In contrast, the 6-speed uses a heavier case and stronger gears. It also adds a sixth ratio, so the gaps between gears are tighter and highway rpm drops. For these reasons, the 6MT is one of the most common drivetrain upgrades for EJ-powered WRX, Forester XT and Legacy GT owners.

Non-DCCD: Simpler Than an STI 6-Speed

STI transmissions use a DCCD center differential, which needs its own controller and wiring. This unit does not. Instead, its center differential works mechanically, much like a standard 5-speed. That makes the install cleaner, the wiring easier and the overall swap more affordable.

Parts You Will Need for a 6MT Swap

Because this is a bare transmission, plan the rest of the drivetrain first. A typical 5MT-to-6MT swap needs:

• A 3.90 rear differential, since the front and rear ratios must match on an AWD Subaru
• Rear axles and diff mounts that fit the rear differential you choose
• A 6-speed shifter, linkage and transmission crossmember
• A driveshaft of the right length for the 6-speed case
• A clutch, flywheel and release parts that match this transmission
• Minor wiring for the reverse light and speed sensor
