JDM Legacy Spec B 6-Speed Transmission (TY856WBDAD, Non-DCCD)

This used JDM Spec B 6-speed transmission comes from a Subaru Legacy Tuned by STI and is sold as the transmission alone. It carries code TY856WBDAD with a 3.90 final drive. Because it is a non-DCCD unit, you do not need a DCCD controller, a switch or extra wiring. As a result, it is one of the simplest ways to put a stronger 6-speed into a Legacy, WRX or Forester.

Why Choose a Spec B 6-Speed Transmission?

Compared to the factory 5-speed, the 6-speed has a stronger case and gear set. In addition, the extra gear gives closer ratios for spirited driving and a more relaxed highway cruise. For turbo builds that have outgrown a 5-speed, this transmission is a common next step. Moreover, the non-DCCD center differential works on its own, so the swap stays mechanically simple.

Important: Match the 3.90 Rear Differential

All-wheel-drive Subarus need the front and rear final drives to match. Since this transmission uses a 3.90 final drive, you must pair it with a 3.90 rear differential. Otherwise, the center differential and drivetrain can be damaged quickly. Also, if your car currently runs a different ratio, your speedometer may read slightly off after the swap.

Swapping Into a WRX or Forester

For a 2002–2007 WRX or a 2003–2008 Forester, plan on these conversion parts:

• A matching 3.90 rear differential, usually an R180 for 6-speed strength
• Rear diff mounts and rear axles that fit the differential you choose
• A 6-speed shifter, linkage and transmission crossmember or mount
• A driveshaft of the correct length for the 6-speed
• A clutch, flywheel and release parts matched to this transmission
• Reverse-light and speed sensor wiring adjustments
