JDM 2014–2015 Subaru Forester XT TR690GBZCA CVT Transmission – FA20DIT 2.0L Turbo AWD
Replace your slipping, shuddering, noisy, or failed CVT with a low-mileage JDM Subaru Forester XT TR690GBZCA transmission from J-Spec Auto Sports.
This genuine Subaru Lineartronic CVT targets compatible 2014–2015 Subaru Forester 2.0XT Premium and 2.0XT Touring AWD models equipped with the FA20DIT 2.0L turbocharged boxer engine.
Subaru identifies this transmission as TR690GBZCA, while OEM assembly reference 31000AJ170 applies to compatible 2014–2015 Forester XT 2.0L applications. Subaru parts data specifically lists this assembly for the 2.0XT Premium and 2.0XT Touring.
Because Subaru used multiple TR690 variants across different models and years, buyers should never select a replacement CVT based only on the TR690 family name.

Subaru TR690GBZCA Transmission Specifications
The TR690 belongs to Subaru’s Lineartronic continuously variable transmission family.
Subaru uses TR690-family transmissions in higher-output applications, including turbocharged vehicles that demand greater torque capacity than many naturally aspirated models.
For this application, Subaru pairs the TR690GBZCA with the FA20DIT 2.0L direct-injected turbocharged boxer engine.
Unlike a traditional automatic transmission with fixed forward gears, the Lineartronic CVT continuously adjusts its operating ratio according to engine load, throttle position, and vehicle speed.
As a result, the transmission can keep the turbocharged engine within an effective operating range while providing smooth acceleration.

Subaru parts data identifies 31000AJ170 / TR690GBZCA for compatible 2014–2015 Forester XT applications.
Important: This Is a Forester XT Turbo CVT
This distinction matters.
The naturally aspirated Forester and the turbocharged Forester XT do not use the same transmission configuration.
This TR690GBZCA targets the 2.0L turbo Forester XT application.
Therefore, customers searching for this transmission should match:
- FA20DIT 2.0L turbo engine
- Forester XT trim
- AWD drivetrain
- TR690GBZCA transmission code
- OEM reference 31000AJ170
- Matching electrical configuration
Do not assume that a CVT from a naturally aspirated Forester 2.5L will work simply because both vehicles use Subaru Lineartronic transmissions.
Important: This Is a CVT, Not a Conventional Automatic
The TR690GBZCA is a Subaru Lineartronic continuously variable transmission.
Therefore, the product should not be described simply as a conventional 5-speed or 6-speed automatic.
A traditional automatic shifts between fixed forward gears.
In contrast, the TR690 continuously changes its operating ratio according to driving conditions.
For that reason, the best product terminology is:
High-Torque Lineartronic CVT Automatic Transmission
This wording remains technically accurate while still matching buyer search behavior.

Always verify the VIN and original transmission before ordering.
Forester XT Touring With EyeSight
The live J-Spec page also lists Forester XT Touring with EyeSight as an application.
Because EyeSight-equipped vehicles can have application-specific electronic considerations, verify the complete original transmission configuration before installation.
Pay close attention to:
- Transmission code
- Electrical connectors
- Sensors
- Wiring
- Valve-body configuration
- TCM-related requirements
- Original OEM part number
Do not rely only on trim name.
FA20DIT 2.0L Turbo Application
This transmission pairs with compatible FA20DIT 2.0L turbocharged Forester XT models.
The FA20DIT uses direct fuel injection and turbocharging, which creates different drivetrain demands from the naturally aspirated Forester 2.5L.
Consequently, Subaru uses a transmission configuration designed specifically for the higher-output turbo application.
Do not confuse:
Forester XT 2.0L Turbo → TR690-family CVT
with
Forester 2.5L Naturally Aspirated → different CVT configuration
Matching the engine and transmission together helps prevent incorrect orders.
TR690 vs. TR580
Subaru uses both TR580 and TR690 Lineartronic CVTs.
However, they are different transmission families.
The TR690 commonly appears in higher-torque applications, while the TR580 appears in many naturally aspirated Subaru vehicles.
Differences may include:
- Internal components
- Torque capacity
- Transmission case
- Valve body
- Sensors
- Solenoids
- Electrical connectors
- Final-drive configuration
- AWD components
- Transmission control strategy
Therefore, never replace a TR690GBZCA with a TR580 simply because both are Subaru CVTs.
TR690GBZCA vs. Other TR690 Codes
The complete Subaru suffix matters.
Subaru used several TR690 variants across Forester, WRX, Legacy, Outback, and other applications.
Although the basic transmission family may look similar, individual codes can differ in:
- Engine application
- Final-drive configuration
- Valve body
- Internal components
- Sensors
- Solenoids
- Electrical connections
- AWD setup
- Software calibration
- Production revision
For that reason, compare the entire TR690GBZCA code before purchasing.
OEM Reference 31000AJ170
The OEM reference provides another strong fitment identifier.
Subaru parts data associates:
31000AJ170 → TR690GBZCA → 2014–2015 Subaru Forester 2.0XT
with Premium and Touring applications.
That relationship is valuable for both customer fitment and SEO.
Customers often search directly for:
- 31000AJ170 transmission
- Subaru 31000AJ170
- TR690GBZCA 31000AJ170
- Forester XT 31000AJ170
- 2014 Forester XT CVT
- 2015 Forester XT transmission
Including these terms naturally can help this page capture high-intent searches.
JDM-to-USDM Fitment
This transmission came from a Japanese-market drivetrain application.
Although the core TR690GBZCA can serve as a replacement for compatible U.S.-market Forester XT models, external differences may exist.
Before installation, place the JDM and original USDM transmissions side by side.
Compare:
- Complete transmission code
- OEM reference
- Transmission case
- Bellhousing
- Valve body
- Electrical connectors
- Sensors
- Solenoids
- Wiring
- Transmission mounts
- Axle connections
- Driveshaft connection
- Cooler connections
- Range switch
- Torque converter
- Drivetrain configuration
When necessary, transfer compatible external components from the original USDM transmission.
Most importantly, do not force electrical connectors, cut wiring, or modify the replacement CVT until you confirm compatibility.

Review every actual product photograph before ordering.
Only components shown in the current photos or specifically stated in the listing should be considered included.
Important CVT Installation Procedure
Correct installation plays a major role in the life of any replacement Subaru CVT.
Contaminated fluid, a restricted cooler, unresolved electronic faults, incorrect drivetrain configuration, or improper installation can damage the replacement transmission.
Therefore, diagnose the original failure before installing the JDM TR690GBZCA.
Diagnose the Original CVT Failure
First, determine why the original transmission failed.
Possible causes include:
- Valve-body problems
- Solenoid faults
- Internal CVT wear
- Chain or pulley damage
- Bearing damage
- Torque-converter problems
- Overheating
- Fluid deterioration
- Cooler restrictions
- Sensor faults
- Wiring problems
- Incorrect fluid level
- Transmission control faults
Correcting the original problem helps protect the replacement transmission.
Flush the CVT Cooler and Lines
Thoroughly clean the CVT cooler and cooler lines before connecting the replacement transmission.
A failed CVT can circulate:
- Metal particles
- Bearing debris
- Friction material
- Contaminated fluid
Consequently, contamination left inside the cooling circuit can enter the replacement transmission soon after startup.
Clean the entire cooling system before installation.
If the cooler cannot be properly cleaned, replace it.
Do not skip this step.
Use the Correct Subaru High-Torque CVT Fluid
This turbocharged TR690 application requires the correct Subaru-specified CVT fluid for the high-torque transmission.
Do not automatically use fluid specified for naturally aspirated TR580 applications.
Likewise, never use conventional automatic transmission fluid.
Verify the correct Subaru CVT fluid specification for the TR690GBZCA Forester XT application before filling the transmission.
Proper fluid helps provide:
- Correct friction characteristics
- Hydraulic operation
- Lubrication
- Cooling
- Chain and pulley protection
- Bearing protection
Never Reuse Old CVT Fluid
Do not reuse CVT fluid from the failed transmission.
Old fluid may contain:
- Metal particles
- Bearing debris
- Friction material
- Dirt
- Other contamination
Instead, fill the replacement transmission with fresh, correct-specification Subaru CVT fluid.
Service the Front Differential Separately
The Subaru CVT and front differential use separate lubricants.
Therefore, do not confuse Subaru CVT fluid with front differential gear oil.
Before startup:
- Drain and inspect the front differential oil.
- Refill it with the correct Subaru-specified gear lubricant.
- Inspect axle seals.
- Check drain and fill plugs.
- Look for leaks.
Using the wrong lubricant in either section can cause serious damage.
Inspect the Torque Converter
Next, inspect the torque converter and confirm compatibility.
Make sure the converter fully seats inside the transmission before installation.
Improper seating can damage the transmission pump during startup.
Therefore, never use bellhousing bolts to force the transmission against the engine.
Inspect Accessible Seals
Check accessible transmission seals while the CVT remains outside the vehicle.
Pay close attention to:
- Axle seals
- Torque-converter seal
- Output areas
- Cooler connections
- Case sealing surfaces
Replace worn or leaking seals before installation.
Doing this work now can prevent additional labor later.
Inspect Engine and Transmission Mounts
The turbocharged Forester XT places substantial load on the drivetrain.
Therefore, inspect the engine and transmission mounts before installing the replacement CVT.
Look for:
- Cracking
- Separation
- Excessive movement
- Damaged brackets
- Loose hardware
Replace damaged components before operation.
Scan the Vehicle Before Removing the Original CVT
Use Subaru-compatible diagnostic equipment before removing the failed transmission.
Record all stored diagnostic trouble codes.
Pay particular attention to:
- CVT codes
- Valve-body codes
- Solenoid codes
- AWD codes
- Engine codes
- Turbo-related engine faults
- ABS/VDC codes
- Communication faults
Do not simply erase the codes.
Instead, diagnose problems that could affect the replacement transmission.
CVT Relearn and Initialization
After installing a replacement TR690, the vehicle may require CVT initialization, learning, or adaptation procedures.
Depending on the repair, Subaru-compatible diagnostic equipment may be necessary.
Therefore, follow the proper Subaru service procedure after installation.
Mechanical installation alone may not complete the repair.
Verify CVT Fluid Level Correctly
Correct fluid level remains critical.
First, fill the transmission according to Subaru’s procedure.
Next, cycle the transmission through the required selector positions.
Then bring the CVT to the specified operating conditions.
Finally, verify the fluid level according to the applicable Subaru service procedure.
Never guess the fluid level.
Initial Startup Checklist
Before road testing:
- Confirm the TR690GBZCA transmission code.

- Reverse engagement
- Smooth acceleration
- Engine RPM behavior
- CVT response
- Turbocharged engine load
- AWD operation
- Transmission temperature
- Shuddering
- Vibration
- Bearing noise
- Warning lights
- Fluid leaks
Avoid aggressive acceleration or heavy boost until you confirm normal transmission operation.
Afterward, scan the vehicle again and inspect the CVT for leaks.
Common Signs of Forester XT TR690 CVT Problems
A failing TR690 CVT can produce:
- Shuddering
- Delayed Drive engagement
- Delayed Reverse engagement
- CVT slipping
- RPM flare
- Whining noise
- Bearing noise
- Jerking
- Overheating
- AWD warning lights
- Transmission warning lights
