By now it should be common knowledge that we, as Americans received almost no “cool” cars from Japan in the 1990’s. The Japanese were kind enough to give us the Supra, RX-7, NSX, and 300ZX twin turbo, but other than that we were practically stuck with the boring commuter version of every other JDM icon. Take for example the Subaru Legacy GT, a beautifully capable station wagon, with a legendary AWD drivetrain and cargo space galore. While the US received the Legacy with your choice of a tired 2.2 or equally-as-tired 2.5l naturally aspirated powerplant, the top trim Japanese legacy was optioned with a punchy twin turbo “EJ20H” motor producing a substantial 260 hp at the crank. Feast your eyes on the example above and you’ll begin to feel the same envy that stateside Subaru enthusiasts have felt for decades. This particular JDM legacy, a 1995 model year example optioned in top-of-the-line B-Spec II trim is a phenomenally kept example of one of Subaru’s most popular touring wagons. The exterior is finished in a beautiful coat of Subaru’s Dark Blue Mica. We have reason to believe this is garage-kept original paint, but given Subaru’s history of questionable paint quality, we cannot verify this for certain. The exterior has been outfitted with a nice selection of JDM goodies. The front fascia has been upgraded thanks to a Greddy front lip and Prova front grille. A set of hard-to-find carbon fiber ganador mirrors have been added, and OEM side skirts and rear spats help round off the smooth body lines on this iconic step roofed wagon. Of course, the crown jewel of this Legacy is the set of flawless Volk Racing CE28 wheels in a gunmetal finish. Apexi coilovers have been installed to eliminate most of the unsightly wheel gap and increase handling, but this wagon still sits at a functional height for daily driving. The interior is just as clean, if not cleaner than the already beautiful exterior. For a car built with the family in mind, this wagon looks like it’s never seen passengers, as all interior upholstery is in perfect condition, with no rips or tears in the factory multi color cloth upholstery. The driver’s seat has been replaced with a reclinable Sparco unit, and is a worthy upgrade for those looking for a more performance oriented driving experience. Other noteworthy interior upgrades include a 3 spoke MOMO “Race” steering wheel, an aluminum shift knob, and aluminum OEM STi pedal covers. The OEM gauge cluster is fully functional and displays just 102k original km’s (63k verified miles!). All dash plastics are in great shape, and all buttons and switches are fully functional, down to the digital climate control display with ice cold A/C. Pop the hood and the twin turbo 2.0 flat four shines in all its glory. This one in particular has been outfitted with some choice JDM dress up bits. A zero sports intake elbow, radiator shroud and intercooler splitter all look great under the hood, and Cusco front and rear strut tower bars tie everything together while giving the chassis a bit of added rigidity. The motor fires right up and idles smoothly, an Apexi megaphone exhaust emits a nice quiet Subaru burble under acceleration without drawing too much attention. The twin sequential turbos spool up nicely and the powerband feels strong. The four speed automatic transmission handles the power quite well and is an excellent option for daily driving or easy highway commutes. For those looking to swap to manual, the job is quite simple and is definitely an upgrade worth looking into down the road. Handling is exceptional, especially for a wagon, and this legacy has no problem darting out of backroad twists and turns. If you’re a Subaru nut or a JDM enthusiast looking for a well-kept, reliable, do it all daily, this Legacy might be the sleeper touring wagon of your dreams.
