TR690JHAAA LINEARTRONIC CVT
The most important identifier for this individual transmission is:
TR690JHAAA
Do not shorten the product identity to simply:
TR690
Subaru produced many TR690 variants with different:
- Final-drive ratios
- Vehicle applications
- Valve-body configurations
- Electrical calibrations
- Sensors
- Wiring
- AWD configurations
- Production revisions
Therefore, use the complete transmission code throughout the page.
The TR690JHAAA is a Lineartronic continuously variable transmission rather than a conventional 5-speed automatic.
It uses:
- Chain-driven continuously variable ratios
- Torque converter
- Primary and secondary pulleys
- Electronically controlled hydraulic valve body
- AWD transfer system
- Integrated front differential
- Electronic transmission control
- Manual simulated-ratio mode
THIS IS NOT A 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC
Do not list:
Gears: 5
The TR690JHAAA is a continuously variable transmission.
In normal Drive mode, the CVT continuously varies its operating ratio rather than shifting through five conventional gears.
For vehicles equipped with manual mode, Subaru provides six programmed simulated ratios.
The recommended WooCommerce field is:
Transmission Type: Lineartronic CVT
Manual Mode: 6 Simulated Ratios
Do not use:
Gears: 5
2.5L NON-TURBO ENGINE APPLICATION
This transmission targets compatible naturally aspirated 2.5L Subaru Legacy applications.
For U.S.-market 2010–2012 Legacy 2.5i models, the 2.5L engine is the SOHC EJ-series configuration commonly identified as EJ253.
The proper product relationship is therefore:
EJ253 2.5L SOHC + TR690JHAAA + AWD + 3.70 Final Drive
Do not describe the engine as:
FB25 SOHC
The FB25 uses a different engine architecture and should not be combined with the EJ253 terminology.

About 2009 Applications
The JDM Legacy platform began this generation earlier than some U.S.-market applications.
Because production dates and transmission suffixes vary, a 2009 customer should verify the original transmission code rather than relying only on year.
The safest fitment language is:
Compatible 2009–2012 Subaru Legacy 2.5L AWD CVT applications that match TR690JHAAA and the 3.70 final-drive configuration.
TR690JHAAA vs. TR690JHBAA
These are different complete Subaru transmission codes.
Do not assume direct interchange.
TR690JHAAA and TR690JHBAA may differ by:
- Production revision
- Valve body
- Control strategy
- Sensors
- Electrical configuration
- Vehicle application
Always compare the complete code.
TR690JHAAA vs. TR690JHABA
Do not confuse:
TR690JHAAA
with:
TR690JHABA
The suffix matters.
Similar TR690 transmissions may use different vehicle applications or final-drive ratios.
A transmission that looks nearly identical externally can still be incorrect for the vehicle.
TR690JHAAA vs. TR690JDJAA / TR690JDKAA
Subaru also used other TR690 transmission codes in Legacy-family vehicles, including TR690JDJAA and TR690JDKAA.
Do not combine these into one Product Code.
For this page, the primary identity must remain:
TR690JHAAA
Other TR690 codes should only appear as related fitment references with a warning to verify interchange.
3.70 FINAL DRIVE
The 3.70 final-drive ratio is one of the most important fitment specifications on this transmission.
Use:
TR690JHAAA 3.70 CVT + Matching 3.70 Rear Differential
Before installation, verify:
- Complete transmission code
- Front final-drive ratio
- Rear differential ratio
- Rear differential identification
- AWD configuration
- Tire circumference
- Tire size
Installing a transmission with the wrong front-to-rear drivetrain ratio can cause:
- Drivetrain binding
- Tire scrubbing
- Center-transfer stress
- Excessive heat
- Differential damage
- Transmission damage
MATCHING REAR DIFFERENTIAL
The vehicle must use the correct rear differential for the transmission’s 3.70 final-drive configuration.
Before startup, confirm:
Rear Differential Ratio: 3.70
Also inspect:
- Differential oil
- Pinion seal
- Axle seals
- Bearings
- Differential mounts
- Driveshaft flange
- Rear axles
Do not assume a rear differential is correct simply because it physically bolts into the vehicle.
AWD SYSTEM
The TR690 works as part of Subaru’s electronically controlled AWD drivetrain.
Proper operation depends on:
- Correct transmission
- Correct rear differential
- Proper tire circumference
- Correct CVT fluid
- Functional wheel-speed sensors
- Proper TCM operation
- Healthy transfer components
A mismatch anywhere in the AWD system can create driveline problems that may incorrectly appear to be a transmission failure.
JDM-TO-USDM FITMENT
This transmission comes from a Japanese-market drivetrain.
Before installation, place the JDM transmission next to the original USDM transmission and compare:
- Complete TR690JHAAA code
- Transmission case
- Bellhousing
- Torque converter
- Valve body
- Main electrical connectors
- Speed sensors
- Range switch
- Wiring harness
- Cooler fittings
- Transmission mounts
- Axle openings
- AWD transfer housing
- Driveshaft connection
- Final-drive configuration
Transfer compatible original USDM external components when required.
Keep the original transmission and related components until installation, programming, and road testing are complete.
PRODUCT CODE AND SERIAL NUMBER
Recommended structured data:
Product Code: TR690JHAAA
Transmission Code: TR690JHAAA
Serial Number: Use the complete individual stamped transmission number if available
The current Serial Number field should not simply repeat:
TR690JHAAA
because that is the model code rather than the individual serial identifier.
The current SKU includes:
069803
Therefore, inspect the physical transmission and determine whether the complete stamped identifier should be entered as:
TR690JHAAA 069803
If physically confirmed, use that complete identifier as the individual Serial Number.

Compression Tested
Compression testing applies to engines.
Use:
Inspected and evaluated before sale
or:
Transmission code verified and unit visually inspected before sale
depending on the exact procedures completed on this transmission.
SUBARU CVT FLUID
Use only the correct genuine Subaru CVT fluid specified for the exact TR690 application.
Do not assume all Subaru CVTs use the same fluid.
Do not use:
- Conventional automatic transmission fluid
- Dexron/Mercon
- Gear oil in the CVT hydraulic circuit
- Universal fluid unless it specifically meets Subaru’s exact specification
- Used fluid from the failed transmission
Correct CVT fluid supports:
- Hydraulic pressure
- Chain and pulley operation
- Torque-converter operation
- Valve-body function
- Lubrication
- Cooling
FRONT DIFFERENTIAL FLUID
The TR690 front differential uses a separate lubricant from the CVT hydraulic system.
Use the Subaru-specified front differential gear oil for the vehicle and transmission.
Do not put CVT fluid into the differential.
Likewise, do not put differential gear oil into the CVT hydraulic circuit.
NEVER REUSE OLD CVT FLUID
Always fill the replacement transmission with fresh correct-specification Subaru CVT fluid.
Fluid from a failed transmission can contain:
- Fine metal particles
- Chain and pulley wear material
- Bearing debris
- Friction material
- Valve-body contamination
- Oxidized fluid
Reusing contaminated fluid can damage the replacement transmission.
FLUSH THE CVT COOLER AND LINES
Thoroughly service the transmission cooler and cooler lines before installing the replacement CVT.
A failed CVT may circulate contamination throughout the cooling circuit.
Before installation:
- Inspect the transmission cooler.
- Flush the cooler lines.
- Remove old fluid.
- Check for restrictions.
- Verify unrestricted flow.
- Replace components that cannot be cleaned properly.
Never connect a replacement CVT to a contaminated cooler system.
RUN MULTIPLE HEAT CYCLES
After filling the transmission:
- Start the vehicle.
- Cycle through all transmission ranges.
- Allow the CVT fluid to circulate.
- Bring the transmission through the proper operating-temperature procedure.
- Recheck fluid level.
- Repeat as necessary until the level remains correct.
Do not assume the first fill completely fills:
- Torque converter
- Valve body
- Cooler
- Cooler lines
- Internal passages
INSPECT THE TORQUE CONVERTER
Inspect:
- Converter hub
- Splines
- Mounting points
- Seal surface
- Overall configuration
Make sure the torque converter is fully seated before mating the transmission to the engine.
Never use bellhousing bolts to pull the transmission against the engine.
Improper converter seating can damage the transmission pump.
REPLACE ACCESSIBLE SEALS
Inspect and replace worn or questionable:
- Torque-converter/front seal
- Left axle seal
- Right axle seal
- AWD output seal
- Cooler-line seals
- Other accessible O-rings and seals
INSPECT THE VALVE BODY
The TR690 relies heavily on its valve body and electronic hydraulic control system.
Inspect:
- Solenoids
- Valve-body connectors
- Wiring
- Pressure-control circuits
- Speed sensors
- Harness connections
Compare the JDM valve-body configuration with the original USDM transmission.
TCM PROGRAMMING AND CVT RELEARN
After installation, perform all applicable Subaru electronic procedures.
These may include:
- TCM reset
- TCM initialization
- CVT learning
- Adaptive relearn
- Calibration
- DTC clearing
- Road-test learning
Use Subaru Select Monitor or another professional diagnostic platform capable of Subaru CVT programming and relearn functions.
SCAN THE VEHICLE BEFORE REMOVAL
Before removing the original CVT, record all stored diagnostic trouble codes.
Pay particular attention to:
- CVT pressure codes
- Ratio-performance codes
- Valve-body codes
- Solenoid codes
- Speed-sensor codes
- Torque-converter codes
- AWD codes
- Communication faults
- Engine codes
Correct the cause of the original failure before operating the replacement transmission.
INSPECT ALL FOUR TIRES
Subaru AWD systems are sensitive to tire-circumference differences.
Verify:
- All four tires are the correct size.
- Tread depth is reasonably matched.
- Tire pressures are correct.
- Rolling circumference is similar.
- No substantially mismatched tire is installed.
Large tire differences can create unnecessary AWD drivetrain stress.
