JDM R18A Motor: Buyer’s Guide

If you’re replacing the engine in a 2006–2011 Civic, you probably have three questions: Will it fit? Is it healthy? And what will the job really cost? This guide answers all three for our JDM R18A motor, so you can decide with confidence.

1. Will It Fit My Civic?

This R18A fits the 2006–2011 Honda Civic DX, LX and EX with the 1.8L engine, in both sedan and coupe form. However, it won’t fit the Civic Si, Hybrid or GX, or the 2012-and-newer Civic. Also, plan on moving a few parts from your old engine, such as the intake manifold, sensors and accessories, since JDM and US versions can differ slightly. 2. How Do I Know It’s Healthy?

We don’t sell engines blind. First, we compression test every cylinder and record the test on video. Next, we photograph the actual engine, including its serial number, so what you see is what you get. In addition, JDM engines often come from lower-mileage cars, because Japan’s strict shaken inspection rules push many owners to retire their cars early.

3. What Should I Budget For?

Besides the motor itself, set aside a little for fresh fluids and wear items. For example, you’ll want new spark plugs, oil, a filter and Honda coolant. If your old engine overheated, also budget for a thermostat, radiator cap and hoses. Finally, check the engine mounts, since worn Civic mounts are common. Covering these up front helps your new motor last for years.
