Subaru’s 2.5L boxer powers some of the most popular wagons and SUVs on the road, but high miles eventually catch up with every engine. This low-mileage JDM Subaru EJ253 SOHC AVLS engine gives your Outback, Legacy, Forester or Impreza a fresh start. It’s a direct replacement for the 2010–2012 Outback and Legacy 2.5i. In addition, it works as a long block for the 2006–2010 Forester and 2006–2011 Impreza. As a result, one engine covers several Subaru models.

What AVLS Means

AVLS stands for Active Valve Lift System. It changes intake valve lift depending on engine speed, so the engine runs efficiently at low RPM and still pulls well at higher RPM. Subaru added AVLS to the EJ253 starting in 2006. Therefore, this engine matches the AVLS-equipped EJ253 in the models listed below.

Direct Fit vs Long Block

For the 2010–2012 Outback and Legacy 2.5i, this EJ253 is a direct replacement. For the 2006–2010 Forester and 2006–2011 Impreza, meanwhile, it serves as a long block. In other words, installers transfer the intake manifold, sensors and accessories from your original engine. Either way, the core engine is the same EJ253 SOHC AVLS design.

Before You Install

A little preventive service goes a long way with the EJ25. First, replace the timing belt, tensioner, idlers and water pump, since the EJ253 uses a timing belt. Next, inspect the head gaskets and valve cover gaskets, which are common EJ25 wear items, and replace them if there’s any sign of seepage. Finally, change the spark plugs, oil, filter and coolant, and prime the oil system before the first start.
