The Datsun (Nissan) Sunny truck was a compact, no nonsense around town hauler that featured timeless styling coupled with steadfast Nissan reliability. At first glance it’s hard to believe that a vehicle like this remained in production until the 1990’s as most of the styling cues and interior amenities are reminiscent of the Sunny Truck’s introduction in the 70’s. The body lines are boxy and crude, the interior is made of various vinyls and plastics, and the engine is carbureted and drastically underpowered. Yet, everything about this truck feels right. There is a true beauty in the simplicity of the Sunny Truck that serves as the antithesis to everything the early 90’s was known for in the automotive world. No complicated turbochargers or electronic fuel injection systems. No leaky air suspension. No Digital dash issues, broken power switches or faulty automatic climate control. The Sunny was built to do it’s job, and do it well. While this truck was a popular platform for aftermarket modifications, our Sunny has remained mostly stock, as evidenced by the stunning exterior. Finished in a beautiful olive green respray, this Sunny no longer wears its original paint. The paint job has been professionally done, with superb attention to detail, as it covers the engine bay as well as the door jambs. The truck bed has been coated in bedliner to protect against scratching and potential surface rust. The tailgate, front bumper and side vents have been painted charcoal black, which provides a nice contrast to the green paint. Black 12” steelies provide a period correct look and are a perfect go-anywhere option when paired with the stock suspension. The interior has been customized as well to give this classic truck some modern amenities. The seats have been professionally reupholstered, retaining the OEM seat fabric, and the vinyl on the headliner appears to have been redone as well. The carpet has been redone in a custom light tan felt and adds a touch of class to a classic interior. The OEM steering wheel has been replaced with an aftermarket DEPO racing unit, wrapped in black leather with red stitching. The OEM dash is in fantastic condition, with no cracks or bubbling, and the odometer displays just 67,321 original km’s! (41k Miles). Service stickers on the interior indicate that this is the actual mileage of this truck, and we believe the number to be accurate based on the overall stunning condition of the vehicle. Perhaps the biggest and most useful modification to the interior is the dealer-installed AC system. This massive AC unit pumps out ice cold air and cools down the cabin quite fast. An aftermarket eclipse touch screen head unit with navigation is fully functional, despite reading in Japanese, and is a suitable replacement for the lackluster stock radio. Mechanically the Sunny Truck is in excellent shape, and the 1.2l 4 cylinder starts right up, thanks to the auto choke system, and chugs along without skipping a beat. Stock power is sluggish, which is to be expected, but for a light-duty around town truck it gets the job done. Luckily there is a wonderful aftermarket for these vehicles, making it relatively easy to squeeze a few more ponies out of this powerplant. The 4 speed manual is easy to drive, and shifts smoothly throughout the powerband. Gearing is short and ideal for city driving.
