This 1991 Toyota Starlet is a GT Turbo model designed by Toyota to compete with other hot hatches of the time, including the VW Golf GTi, Mazda Familia GTX, and Nissan Pulsar GTI-R. The Starlet nameplate has a rich history in both the US and Japan. Earlier generations were championed for their light curb weight and rear wheel drive configuration, making this commuter car a joy to drive to work during the week, or on a spirited drive during the weekend. While this Front Wheel Drive EP82 Starlet isn’t the same barebones race ready hatch as its predecessor, it still comes equipped with a punchy 1.3l turbocharged engine, smooth shifting 5 speed gearbox, and plush interior outfitted with all of the creature comforts necessary in the groundbreaking 1990s. The exterior is finished in a respray of the OEM Satin Black Metallic paint. While most JDM cars of this vintage are thoroughly modded with flashy exterior aero, we are pleased to say that this Starlet has maintained a stock exterior throughout its 28 years on the road, with the only modification being a set of aftermarket 8 spoke wheels, a worthwhile replacement for the unsightly OEM steelies. The interior of this vehicle has held up exceptionally well over the years. With the dash displaying only 143,203 kilometers (88,982 miles) it’s clear to see that this low mileage Starlet was well taken care of. As many car enthusiasts do, the previous owner made some slight modifications to the interior of the vehicle to enhance the driving experience, such as cupholders, a Turbo Timer, and a period-correct Kenwood sound system, complete with an Alpine CD changer in the spacious trunk. Despite its stock appearance, this Starlet is a blast to drive! The 4E engine fires right up and power is responsive and punchy. The stock suspension does a surprisingly good job at carving corners, diving in and out of turns with ease. This is truly a “hot hatch” in every essence of the word, and future owners of this vehicle will undoubtedly have their hands on a truly fun Japanese Classic.
