In the 90’s, some of the best vans in the world were being produced in the land of the rising sun. Vans like the Mitsubishi Delica, Nissan Homy, and of course the legendary Toyota Hiace offered exceptional interior space, abundant creature comforts, and superb fuel mileage all in a relatively compact package. So why weren’t these do-it-all roadtrip warriors offered for sale to the US market? We may never know, but now that import vehicles are taking America’s roads by storm, they’re a perfect option for any adventurous buyer looking for an equally as unique and adventurous vehicle. This 1995 model year Toyota Hiace (pronounced high-ace) is the quintessential JDM adventure van. Spec’d from the factory in “Super Custom Limited” trim with Toyota’s 1KZ-TE turbo diesel motor, this is one sought after example that shouldn’t be passed up. The exterior is finished in a lovely original two-tone gold and tan finish, with the original pinstriping and graphics still intact and some choice exterior modifications made to enhance the look of the vehicle. OEM front, side, and rear bullbars look great on the factory bodywork, and a rear spoiler adds a unique touch to the rear end of the vehicle. The drab OEM steel wheels have been replaced with a much more fitting set of 6 spoke alloys. The interior follows suit condition wise and it’s clear the factory owner spent just as much time caring for it as they did the exterior. The seats are trimmed in a matching brown cloth material which looks awesome and completely period correct. All upholstery is free of any rips, tears, or burns and even the seat bolsters are sturdy and defect free. As the driver, you have control over your choice of three different sunroofs, a manual tilt sunroof in the front, a full sliding moonroof in row two, and two pop-up windows in the rear. The rear climate control unit is fully operational, and even the power curtains still function like new! The cockpit of this van is a great place to be. The digital dash is fully functional and displays just 160k verified km (99,515 original miles!) The only thing missing from the interior is the OEM radio, which would have been more for decoration anyways as it does not pick up US radio frequencies. All dash plastics are in excellent shape and all buttons and switches work as expected, even the digital climate control has no issues and the AC blows ice cold throughout the cabin. Mounted below the passenger seat is the aforementioned 1KZ-TE four-cylinder turbo diesel. Paired to a smooth shifting automatic transmission, this is the perfect combination for driver’s looking to maximize their fuel cost and mileage on long road trips. The engine cranks over with no hesitation and runs smooth! This Hiace has clearly been well maintained over the years, it drives like a brand-new van.
