Vehicle History
In the early 1990’s, Toyota was at the top of their game, pumping out performance cars left and right. Their flagship sport coupe, the record shattering Toyota Supra, set the benchmark for what Japanese auto manufacturers were able to produce. When Toyota saw the success of the Supra in the Japanese market, they decided to capitalize on the situation, beefing up their lineup of commuter cars with the powerhouse twin turbocharged 1JZ-GTE engine and stout R154 5 speed manual transmission. This sleeper sedan you see before you is one of those cars. Known as the JZX90, this extremely versatile sedan was internationally known in the 1990’s as the do-it-all luxury sedan. Offered in a broad variety of trims in Japan, the X90 could be spotted everywhere from city streets and highways to mountain touges and road courses. This particular 1995 model year example, known as the Toyota Mark II Tourer V, was the most barebones 1JZ and manual transmission equipped vehicle you could buy at the time. As any good car enthusiast knows, less features means more room for modification, and this example certainly has been properly modified in true JDM fashion. The exterior is finished in a beautiful coat of Toyota Super White (040) paint and has been outfitted with full genuine Vertex aero. Consisting of a front lip, side skirts, and rear bumper, the Vertex kit gives this JZX90 the signature aggressive “low down” look and, coupled with the lowered stance from a set of fully adjustable CST coilovers, this Mark II is a certified head turner. Completing the exterior fit and finish is a full set of CST Zero 1 Hyper X Wheels in a lovely matte black finish. The aesthetic of this vehicle is perfect, nothing too crazy or over the top, and nothing sloppily put together. This is truly a dream JDM sedan in immaculate condition. The interior is just as clean and has remained mostly stock. For a 26 year old vehicle, all materials are in excellent shape. The upholstery on the original seats is free of any rips, tears, or burns. The driver’s seat has been swapped for a unit out of a JZX100 chaser, likely to replace a bucket seat that was formerly in the vehicle. All dash materials are in great shape, with the original deep blue vinyl remaining fully intact, with no sun damage, cracks, or fading. All dash buttons, switches, and features work as expected, down to the automatic climate control and air purifier! The back seats are incredibly roomy and this Mark II will have no issues comfortably seating a full squad of JDM enthusiasts. The factory sunroof is fully functional, leak free, and appears to have been recently maintained. A D1 Spec Steering wheel replaces the clunky OEM unit and frames a genuine TRD gauge cluster. Showing just 148,289 km (92,000 miles), this low mileage cannot be verified due to the aftermarket cluster but appears to be in line with previous records and maintenance stickers on the vehicle. Pop the hood and you’ll be happy to see the engine bay remains just as clean as the rest of the vehicle. The twin turbocharged 1JZ-GTE fires right up and idles smoothly, not surprising given that this was one of Toyota’s most reliable powerplants. Modifications to this 1JZ are minimal, and increase performance without sacrificing much reliability. An HKS intake and Blitz front mount intercooler ensure cold air is delivered pre, and post turbo, and a custom dual tip exhaust sounds fantastic and looks awesome tucked into the rear bumper. With a timing belt sticker showing replacement within the last 10k km’s, we’re certain this example was properly maintained up until the day it left Japanese shores. Driving this Mark II is a rewarding experience. Both turbos spool quickly and produce a symphony of forced induction goodness as you soar through the rev range. The powerband is smooth and perfect for around town cruising. If you didn’t notice already, this JZX90 has been swapped and equipped with a proper “R154” 5 speed manual gearbox, really unlocking the potential of the drivetrain. Shifts are smooth and accurate, thanks to a short throw shifter, and all gears engage smoothly with no grinds or pop outs. A factory Torsen LSD helps put power down to the rear wheels with ease, and is definitely the best rear end option for this chassis. A Mark II of this caliber only comes around once in a blue moon, so enthusiasts searching for the perfect example should jump on this beautiful JZX90 before it’s gone.
