Vehicle History
Up for sale is a gorgeous, limited edition example of one of Toyota’s most legendary sport coupes, the Celica ST185. Introduced in 1989, the ST185 Celica was Toyota’s prototype chassis for competing in the World Rallycross Championship, better known as the WRC. Thanks to a team of dedicated European rally drivers, the ST185 Celica went on to win 3 WRC championships, putting Toyota on the map in rally racing, and making the brand a force to be reckoned with against dominant European manufacturers such as Lancia. While the Celica was available in a variety of different trims, the top-trim, turbocharged all-wheel drive GT-Four was the one to have. If you were lucky, you could get your hands on a GT Four RC, a homologation special model with a slew of performance upgrades. Only 5,000 ST185 RC’s were made, and this is one of them. The exterior of this GT Four RC is a perfect testament to 90’s rally styling. Finished in a beautiful coat of Toyota black (202), the paint shines like new, and really accentuates the iconic 90’s styling. Records from Japan indicate that there has been some minor paint and body work in the past, but all repairs appear to have been professionally done as the body is smooth and defect free. The only modifications to the exterior are a set of iconic period-correct OZ Racing chrono wheels, an appropriate and popular addition to the Celica chassis that really accentuates the rally inspired styling. This 90’s legend is really one that needs to be appreciated in person. The body is rust free and oozes WRC goodness from every panel, with the most extreme styling cues on the front end. The RC featured a special front bumper and hood that increased airflow and directed heat away from the engine. The interior is equally as clean as the exterior and has held up incredibly well over the past 28 years. The retro-cool multicolor upholstery on the OEM seats is free of any rips, tears, or burns, and all interior dash plastics are in excellent condition. All buttons, switches, and dials work as expected, including the power adjustable seat bolsters, and stand as a testament to Toyota’s excellent build quality in the 1990s. A 3 spoke MOMO steering wheel replaces the clunky OEM unit, and serves as a great compliment to the cockpit style dash. Plop down behind the wheel and you’ll instantly see why this is a driver’s car, all controls are conveniently oriented towards the person piloting the vehicle. Luckily, the interior of this collector’s Celica is free of any gaudy aftermarket modification, and all materials have been preserved exceptionally well. The OEM instrument cluster is fully functional and displays 197,701 original km’s, translating to roughly 122,800 original miles, this RC was no garage queen, but the previous owner appears to have maintained it to meticulous standards. If you thought this Celica looked great, it drives even better. Pop the hood and the powerplant sits front and center. This road going rally car was equipped from the factory with Toyota’s legendary 3S-GTE engine, producing a modest 200hp. Coupled with the vehicles light weight and upgraded close ratio 5 speed manual transmission, this Celica gets up and goes without issue, tearing through twisty backroads with ease. The RC models featured a special water to air intercooler, a neat innovation that Toyota carried on into next generation Celica. Turn the key and the 2.0 turbocharged inline 4 engine whirrs to life. The turbocharger spools up without hesitation and propels this 3SGTE to redline with ease. Shifts through the close ratio 5 speed manual gearbox are smooth and direct and make this car an absolute blast to drive around town. Modifications to the powertrain are minor, an HKS intake helps the engine breathe better, and an HKS Silent Hi Power catback exhaust sounds wonderful as this 4 banger screams through the powerband. A set of Tein coilovers give the vehicle a lower stance and also help this all wheel drive beast stay planted in even the most demanding of backroad corners. For the discerning rally enthusiast, there’s really no better collector’s car to own than the GT Four RC, and this is one pristine example sure to hold its value well for years to come.
