With the highly iconic R32 and R34 Skylines surrounding it, it’s safe to say the R33 has always suffered from a classic case of middle child syndrome. With smoother, more bulbous bodylines than its predecessors, it took enthusiasts a while to adjust to Nissan’s new design language in the mid 1990’s. Now that they’re legal in the US, where Skylines were once considered unobtanium, the R33 is finally getting its time to shine. The R33 GTS25T model in particular is undoubtedly a fan favorite amongst Nissan enthusiasts in the USA. With a stout and powerful RB25DET turbocharged I6 and precise handling dynamics the R33 is one of the best driving classic JDM cars you can still get at a relatively affordable price. This 1996 model year example is the first of the “Series 2” R33’s and was optioned from the factory in desirable “Type M” trim with the factory 5 speed manual transmission. Series 2 R33’s featured subtle, more aggressive upgrades to the exterior to mitigate complaints about the bubbly exterior of the former model. With a fully revised front end, this R33 does the Skyline name justice and turns heads wherever it goes. Finished in a coat of original Nissan KR4 sonic silver, this R33 looks great! Per our attached auction report, the hood and front right fender were replaced and resprayed, but all paint matches incredibly well. The OEM 5 spoke wheels were removed in favor of a classic, period correct set of Rays Vesta Eins Kahn5 3 piece wheels, a perfect complement for this classic sport coupe! The rest of the exterior has remained completely stock, and the OEM aero touches such as the side skirts and spoiler are plenty aggressive without being over the top. The interior follows suit and is equally as clean. The OEM seats are in good shape, with only one minor tear present on the driver’s side upholstery. The dash is in overall good shape, save for some light sun fading. The interior trim is in good physical condition, thanks to the upgraded materials used on the series 2 dash, and all buttons and switches work as expected. The A/C was freshly recharged and blows ice cold! The OEM instrument cluster is fully functional and displays just 68,122 verified km (42k miles!) which is certainly a rare sight to see on a 25 year old vehicle. Those meticulous about interior condition will be pleased to know that interior modifications are few and far between, save for an aftermarket shift knob and an Apexi rev speed meter (digital tachometer) affixed below the steering column. Turn the key and the RB25DET engine fires up without hesitation. This inline 6 powerhouse is a great platform for making some seriously fun power, and Nissan equipped Series 2 GTST’s with revised ECU mapping for more exhilarating driving dynamics! Boost comes on strong and the vehicle pulls smoothy to redline with no hesitations or hiccups. The engine remains mostly stock, with the only modifications being an HKS intake and exhaust. Service stickers scattered throughout the vehicle confirm that the previous owner took excellent care of this car, with a the timing belt replaced only 2k miles ago! The transmission engages all 5 gears smoothly without any grinds or pop outs. We have always felt that the R33 is one of the more daily driveable skylines as overall driving dynamics are surprisingly smooth and refined. Even with stock suspension and brakes, the R33 is an incredibly capable performer, and with such low miles on the odometer, this Skyline is a worthy investment sure to hold its value for years to come.
