The NA chassis Mazda Roadster is one of the most important enthusiast cars of all time. It is, arguably, the most fun one can have on a budget, it’s incredibly easy to work on, fuel efficient AND has iconic styling to boot. If you’re into cars, it’s almost guaranteed that at one point in time you’ve wanted a Miata, or at least entertained the idea of adding one to your fleet. With many North American market examples falling victim to rust and corrosion it’s become increasingly difficult to find a clean chassis stateside. This is where the Japanese market comes in. These JDM “Eunos Roadsters” tend to have lower mileage and cleaner bodies than most USDM Miatas and come with some choice JDM specific features. This particular 1992 Eunos Roadster has been outfitted head to toe in custom spec JDM parts and is an extremely well put together and polished sport coupe ready to tear up the streets or the circuit! One look at the exterior and you’ll instantly notice that this isn’t your normal NA chassis Miata. Gone are the iconic pop up headlights, barebones body, and retractable soft top. This roadster has been outfitted with a complete “RE:NEW” widebody kit and front end conversion. This kit replaces the factory front bumper, headlights, hood, fenders, side skirts, rear quarters, and rear bumper and is finished in a stunning metallic green finish. Nestled in the wide fender arches are a set of deep dish 15” Work Nezart wheels, a fitting complement to the rest of the JDM goodies on this one. An aftermarket aluminum GT wing and custom taillights accentuate the rear end, making this one iconic roadster with no corners cut whatsoever. Despite the amount of aftermarket parts, everything flows quite nicely and the car retains most of its original charm without being too over the top. Speaking of top, an OEM hardtop has been installed. While the original soft top is fully intact and stored inside, we’d argue a hardtop is a must have accessory for this chassis. As expected, the interior of this roadster has been fully modified to track-spec as well, if the full roll cage wasn’t telling enough. The driver’s seat has been replaced with a Bride low max unit, a fitting upgrade over the flimsy stock bucket seat that still resides on the passenger side. All interior materials and dash plastics are in good shape, with no cracking, peeling, or sun fading to be found! An Alcantara Key’s racing steering wheel feels great in your hands as you pilot this roadster, and a fully custom center console matches the old school racer aesthetic quite nicely. Four defi gauges are installed in the center stack as well, and display boost, oil pressure, oil temp, and water temp. A boost controller mounted below the steering column allows the driver to switch between low and high boost maps, and the radiator fans are controlled via a toggle switch to the bottom right of the steering wheel. The interior carpet has been stripped, revealing this roadster’s original silver paint, but many other interior creature comforts are still intact, such as power windows, air conditioning, and the radio. On the original instrument cluster, the displayed 75,184 km’s are unverified, but based on the condition of the car, actual mileage can’t be far off. Pop the hood and this well modified miata shows off it’s final party trick. While the 1.6 is plenty good in factory form, the previous owner of this roadster installed a full turbo kit to bump up the smiles per gallon and make this roadster a force to be reckoned with on the road or track. A Greddy turbo, HKS intake, custom intercooler and custom header back exhaust are the bones of the kit, and the fueling system has been fully upgraded to make sure this power is made reliably. An aluminum Koyo radiator keeps the engine cool, and engine management is handled via a Maruha Motors “Freedom” ECU. The stock 5 speed transmission has been ditched in favor of a more stout 6 speed unit out of an NB2 roadster, and is a worthy upgrade over stock. Driving this Eunos is a blast, as you’d expect. Power comes on exceptionally quick and holds strong through the rev range. Shifts through all 6 gears are smooth with no grinds or pop outs, and an LSD diff puts the extra power down to the rear wheels without issue. A set of Tein Control master adjustable coilovers help with handling in backroad twists and turns, and a cusco strut bar increases chassis rigidity in addition to the roll cage. You won’t find another roadster like this. Really, we’re serious. If you want a Miata with more JDM coolness than you can shake a stick at, this one of one Eunos is the way to go.
