Out of all the iconic classic sports cars that are eligible to import from Japan, 3 “halo cars” will always have a spot in every JDM enthusiast’s dream garage. Nissan’s fierce “Godzilla” GTR, Toyota’s iconic 4th generation Supra, and Mazda’s futuristic and quirky FD RX-7. While the GTR and Supra were quick to skyrocket to collector status, with sky high prices, it took a while for the RX7 to catch up. It’s safe to say that those who bought RX7’s at the beginning of their legality here in the US have made a sound investment, as prices have practically doubled over the past year alone. The timeless RX7 is a car that enthusiasts just can’t get enough of, and now that Japanese Spec examples are legal to import into the USA, the market is able to be consistently supplied with tasteful, low mileage examples, such as this 1993 Vintage Red beauty offered here at J- Spec Auto. This particular “Efini” FD3S RX7, optioned from the factory in rare Bathurst Type X trim is astoundingly clean and looks to have been gently used and preserved well by the previous owner. The exterior is finished in a beautiful coat of Mazda’s iconic Vintage Red (NU), by far the most recognizable color choice on these FD’s. The vehicle received a professional respray in the USA and was detailed afterwards to comply to our rigorous vehicle restoration standards. The exterior has remained mostly stock with the only modification being a rear spoiler delete. The OEM side skirts and rear spats, standard equipment on Type X Bathurst models, provide a welcome enhancement to the body of the vehicle and accentuate the FD’s smooth, futuristic body lines. The rest of the body is clean, original, and rust free. The inside is in equally as clean condition and stands as a testament to the simplistic elegance of early 90's sports car interiors. The rare factory leather seats are in good shape given the age, with light stress marks on the driver’s seat being the only visible defect. All other materials in the interior are in great shape, down to the leather on the JDM specific rear seat, and all buttons and switches on the dash function as expected. The factory steering wheel was replaced with a stylish MOMO Race wheel, a perfect complement to the interior. The interior is free of any aftermarket modification, save for a necessary Greddy boost gauge affixed atop the steering column. The pictures on this one really speak for themselves, this car is gorgeous. The original gauge cluster is intact and fully functional, displaying just 62,000 original KM’s (39k miles!) Turn the key and the 13B twin turbo engine fires right up and happily purrs at idle. Producing a stout 255hp from stock, this oddball rotary has a healthy amount of get up and go. Air induction modifications, such as a Greddy intercooler and an RE Amemiya intake system help the twin turbos spool nicely and the engine has no issues at all reaching its screaming 8,000 RPM redline. An aftermarket Kakimoto “R” exhaust emits a nice whirr under acceleration without being incredibly overbearing. Other than that, the engine is free of any serious aftermarket modification that may hamper reliability in the future. Driving this FD3S is as much of a treat as you’d expect. Boost comes on strong at the low RPM’s and the sequential twin turbos spool healthily throughout the powerband. The 5 speed manual transmission engages all gears without hesitation and an aftermarket clutch helps put the power to the ground with ease! Aftermarket struts with lowering springs keep this RX7 dialed in the corners and a brand new set of tires ensure that this RX7 will grip the road no matter what weather conditions are thrown its way.
