The FD3S Efini (Mazda) RX7 can be best described with one word, timeless. Throughout the years, Mazda’s 3rd generation wankel powered warrior has never gone out of style. Its smooth, futuristic body lines have graced many a bedroom wall poster, and their popularity in the tuning scene has made the FD a fan favorite at shows or on the racetrack. It’s a car that enthusiasts just can’t get enough of, and now that Japanese Spec examples are legal to import into the USA, the market is able to be consistently supplied with tasteful, low mileage examples, such as this 1992 Silver Stone Metallic beauty offered here at J- Spec Auto. With only 101,138 km’s (62,844 miles!) on the clock, this FD RX7 has plenty of life left, and is equipped with a plethora of quality modifications to further enhance the driving experience of this iconic 90’s sport coupe. The exterior of this FD3S has been equipped with a number of body parts off of the facelift “99 Spec” RX7, a variant that the US market never received, due to USA production ending in 1997. Japanese models, however, continued to see production until 2002, much to the envy of the rest of the world. The front bumper, tail lights, and rear bumper spats are all genuine 99 spec items, and really accentuate this FD’s iconic body lines. A pair of aftermarket side skirts have been added, which complement the OEM body work quite nicely, and an aftermarket vented FRP hood has been added and freshly painted to increase aesthetics as well as aid in cooling the engine bay. Rounding off the exterior mods is a set of 17 inch Work Emotion XT7 wheels. The paintwork on the exterior appears to be original, save for the obviously repainted aftermarket parts, and is free of any major defects, including fading or gouges. Swing open the stout coupe doors and the clean, driver oriented cockpit welcomes you in. The OEM suede seats are in good condition, and free of rips, tears, or burns. Although this FD is nearing 30 years of service, the interior has been kept exceptionally well. All dash plastics are in good shape, and all buttons, switches, and controls are fully functional. Modifications to the interior are subtle, with the only major changes being a MOMO deep dish steering wheel, RAZO shift knob, and Panasonic double din head unit. The JDM-exclusive rear seats are in good shape, although their utility is questionable. Pop the hood, and the infamous 13B Twin Turbo rotary engine sits front and center. This oddball motor fires right up and revs smoothly throughout the powerband up to a screaming 8,000 RPM’s. The engine has been kept mostly stock, with the exception of a modest RE Amemiya exhaust. Shifts through the 5 speed manual transmission are smooth and direct, and the car is quite a treat to drive throughout the corners, thanks to a set of top quality Cusco coilovers. Don’t let its appearance fool you, this FD is easy to drive and extremely rewarding if the powerband is used to its full potential.
