When it comes to early 90’s JDM rally cars, the Mazda Familia is often considered the black sheep of the bunch. It doesn’t carry the same prestige as the Subaru Impreza STi or Mitsubishi Lancer evo, or the infamous controversy of the Toyota Celica GT-Four. Looking back, it seems as if the Familia deserved much more attention than it actually received. It was an incredibly capable hot hatchback, with the turbocharged 1.8l powerplant delivering rapid acceleration. Paired with a close ratio 5 speed transmission and limited slip differential, the Familia makes up in performance what it lacks in recognition. Available in Naturally Aspirated configuration as well, it is the turbocharged GTX and GTR models that really stood out. This particular Familia is a GTX model from 1990 and has held up extremely well over the years. The exterior is finished in the original black paint, and is free of any dents, scratches, or clear coat fade. While this GTX lacks the larger fog lamps and more aggressive front bumper of the GTR model, the multicolor Raybrig fog lights do a fine job of bringing out that signature rally look. A set of silver aftermarket 5 spoke alloys replace the lackluster stock wheels and are accentuated nicely by a set of red mudflaps. The interior is simple and appears to have been maintained quite well for an almost 30-year-old vehicle. The stock cloth seats are free of any major rips and tears. The dash shows light signs of wear but is free of any cracks or bubbles. The stock radio appears to have been removed and an aftermarket unit can be installed before purchase if the buyer desires. A period correct Lamco gauge pod was also installed and leaves one space open for a gauge of your choosing. The dash displays an original 159,971 kilometres, which translates to roughly 99k original miles. It’s evident the previous owner knew of the car’s rarity and sought to preserve this beautiful example of such a seldom-seen rally car. Turn the key and the 1.8l inline four-cylinder fires right up. Interestingly enough, this is the same engine found in the NA and NB Miata. When paired with a quick-spooling turbocharger and all wheel drive, this powerplant becomes an entirely different animal. Fortunately, this engine has remained stock it’s entire life, and runs and accelerates quite smoothly. While the engine is fun, the drivetrain is where this vehicle truly shines. Although the vehicle is currently riding on a set of good winter tires, a good set of performance rubber will push it to it’s maximum potential on the backroads or a track. If you’re looking for a truly rare hot hatch with rally roots, this Mazda is one worth keeping in the Familia.
