It’s no secret that Honda was at the top of their game during the 1990’s. Performance oriented models, such as the Civic Si and Integra Type R were economical yet exciting, and the CR-V and Odyssey were utilitarian options that were built to do it all and do it reliably. While every model seemed to have its own role in Honda’s lineup, there was one car that never seemed to fit in. The EG2 CRX Del Sol. It was a convertible, but not a grand, luxurious one. It was a compact car, but not a practical hot hatchback. It was, however, loved by many, and has amassed a sizable cult following of both Honda enthusiasts and car enthusiasts in general. This 1992 model year Del Sol is a healthily modified Japanese Market example and comes equipped in top-of-the-line SiR trim, a variation the US domestic market never received. The most intriguing feature, perhaps, is the power retractable hardtop, more affectionately referred to by Honda as the “Transtop”. With the flick of a few switches, the hardtop automatically removes itself, and stores itself in the trunk of the vehicle. For a car from the early 90’s, that’s pretty impressive. JDM models also benefitted from a performance-oriented engine option as well, none other than Honda’s legendary 1.6l 4 Cylinder B16A VTEC engine, a powerplant so good it made drift king Keiichi Tsuchiya declare the CRX Del Sol SiR to be one of the most important Japanese sports cars of all time. While this particular example has since seen a complete engine overhaul with a 2.0 bottom end, it still features the VTEC goodness that performance Honda’s are known for. Cosmetically, this Del Sol is nothing short of beautiful. The body is finished in a fresh coat of black pearl paint. While the respray was done recently, our provided auction sheet and records from Japan state that the vehicle is accident free and in excellent condition. The exterior has been outfitted with some choice modifications to really make this Del Sol stand out from the pack, a genuine Mugen front bumper has been installed, and pairs perfectly with the more aggressive fender flares, giving this Del Sol a wider, more menacing stance. Filling out the larger flares are a set of 16” Yokohama Kreuzer Series X wheels, in a fitting gunmetal finish. The interior is simplistic, driver focused, and most importantly incredibly clean. A few aftermarket modifications have been fitted to enhance the driving experience. The flimsy stock bucket seats were replaced with a set of reclinable Sparco Racing seats. The fabric is in great condition, with minimal bolster wear. The dash is in also in excellent shape, and all buttons and switches work as expected, down to the AC, Radio, and Climate Control with automatic air conditioning! The steering wheel has been replaced with an aftermarket Nardi personal unit, which feels great in your hands as you drive down the road. The gauge cluster displays just 137k original km’s, which translates to just 85,678 verified miles! Mechanically, this Del Sol is in excellent condition, and the engine has undergone a massive overhaul, complete with a B20B bottom end and B16 VTEC head to deliver more power across the board! A few choice modifications have been installed to increase performance without going too over the top. A Larger intake helps this B series breathe better, and a Feel’s exhaust header and Fujitsubo catback exhaust remove unnecessary restrictions in the stock system and sound great under acceleration! Lastly an aluminum radiator keeps temps cool under even the most demanding of driving conditions. Shifts through the 5 speed manual transmission are smooth and direct, with no grinds or pop outs, and short gear ratios make this thing a blast to drive around town or on twisty backroads! This Del Sol would make an excellent daily cruiser or track toy as handling is incredibly proficient.
